They can't do this. Surely there must be a law stating that a programme must be shown on analogue AND both digital. But because of the digital switchover that law is now out of the picture.

Umm, no, I don't think that's the case. I don't see any law stating that the crappy Cirque du Celebrite thing has to be shown on analogue.

Probably 95% of all imported programmes shown on UK television are shown on digital and not analogue.

Of course there isn't a law stating that all programmes *must* be on FTA TV.

There *used* to be a clause protecting sporting events, but I think even that's been forgotten about now.

In any case, given that digital-only is going to be a reality for some viewers in Britain from 2008, and that you can buy a freeview receiver for around 10% of the cost of a TV licence, is there really any excuse for still being analogue-only?

Still protects Football World Cup, Olympic Games, FA Cup Final etc, but yes the list is decreasing by the year, most notably the recent removal of England home cricket Test Matches.

The Jewel in the Sporting Crown law was only introduced when Sky starting buying the exclusive rights to sporting events - starting with the Premiership 12 years ago. In a time when multi-platform TV was a real minority.

Nowadays there are more and more people uptaking not only Freeview but the cable and Sky platforms so each year it is becoming more increasingly common to have multiplatform TV therefore the need for that sports protection law is becoming more and more pathetic. Also with the new EU laws there is always going to be at least one sporting highlights package to be picked up by the old FTA (aka old terrestrial) stations. Again it comes down to individual choice if you want to watch live events or not by choosing which platform package you want.

I never really did get the sporting clause anyway. Why is sport considered so vitally important? Oh I forgot -- lobby groups (on both sides) with teeth! Can't have the government standing up to these guys can we?

Going back to Lost, even if it does end up being Sky-only (doubtful), it'll end up on Sky 3 at some stage. At which point if you want to see it go to your local Asda and pay the man £14.99 for a Freeview STB. No great hardship is it?

Anyone has any idea what day/time its going to be on? I don't watch as I have explained but only I have Sky One (in the house) so my brothers' going to get his way and watch it on my TV.

Anyway heard a rumour its on sundays at 9pm sametime as Torchwood on BBC3 (which I watch) in which case he can get stuffed.

They unite the nation and the vast majority of people would agree with keeping them free to air. The thought of the World Cup (of football) i.e. the biggest sporting event on planet earth being on Sky Sports 1 is frankly sickening.

It will be Sky only- nobody (and I mean no terrestrial channel) will pay for sloppy seconds off Sky One, and it's in Sky's interest to maintain Sky Three share on Freeview (an advert for Sky subscription) by offering Lost to freeview viewers after it's been shown on Sky One.

It's very likely that you'll have several opportunities across the week to catch Lost (just like you can with Torchwood). Sky One are also suggesting they may use interactivity on Sky Digital to increase your chances, just like they did with 24 over the world cup with start times every 15 minutes on broadcast night.

They have with Stargate, Star Trek, 24, Buffy and many others. Why should Lost be any different? If anything there's more call for this series on terrestrial than these other programmes.

I'm sure that Sky would love to keep the show for itself, but at the end of the day it's not necessarily Sky's decision to make -- the programme belongs to ABC and its producers.

1. Sky have bought the exclusive UK rights for Lost, that's both the Pay-TV and Free to air broadcasts. It's up to them if they sell them on or not. ABC have no say in this matter anymore.

2. Of the shows you listed, I don't know about Stargate, Buffy or Star Trek, but 24 has NEVER returned to terrestrial TV following its acquisition by Sky (from Season 3 onwards).

It's also the most recent and most relevant example, and yes it's ended up on Sky Three eventually...and in doing so attracts viewers to subscribe to Sky One to see the next series that bit quicker.

Seriously there is no chance you'll see Lost Seasons 3 or 4 on any free to air service except Sky Three.

A. I have telewest digital, so don't have the 'interactive' option.

B. What day and time/day will the episode 'premier' and is it the same time as Torchwood?? thats what I want to know.
