Wasn't entirely convinced it was chroma-key - though at first I assumed it had to be.  The whole sequence looked a bit soft (edited on Beta I guess) - so it was difficult to see if there were any keying edge effects, and I didn't see a lighting shadow behind her - which would imply CSO.

(BTW remember that the CSO screen or board doesn't have to be huge to do something like that if the presenter stays within a small area of the screen. It is possible to make the shot far wider than the green/blue screen and mask the CSO to force the graphics/background to appear even where there isn't any green/blue. This only works if the presenter then doesn't walk into the masked areas! )

However what made me question whether it was CSOed was the video in the top left of screen. It looked a bit washed out, like it was projected rather than 'real'.

Also Working Lunch and Newsnight have just started using a HUGE projector screen (Working Lunch use it for Adam Shaws new whizzy graphics).  This new projector would be big enough to do a standup graphics sequence as done by Julie.  I wondered if this was done for Breakfast (Julie is mainly a Breakfast reporter/presenter), and presumably Breakfast would also have access to this projector, as it is in the same studio?

I'll keep my eyes peeled for similar.

Sorry about that Andrew, but how DID you get ATV Midlands as your ITV1 region, and Nationwide as your BBC News? They're both retro!

that was a bit harsh there andrew. i agree that the events of the last week or so have been difficult to stomach, but at the end of the day, 21st centuary news is the utilisation of all aspects of electronic media to hand. one can hardly blame Sky for taking advantage of this.

On the other hand, CNN's 'interactive attack guide' did seem a bit OTT...
Hi Gav,

I've no problem at all with Sky being prepared and using all the latest equipment and technology at its disposal -- they should do.

No, my main qualm came from reading the sentence saying there may well be a war from next week including lots of attacks and invasions.

I'm sure there was no intention, but that just seemed so trite.

Sorry to clutter this thread up with this, but Alekf commented on how to do this on another thread. BTW I've removed the 'offending' details.

Sorry, so what's the difference between chroma-key and CSO then? I assumed they were both the same thing (a presenter, a uniquely found background colour, and a separate video source which is keyed into the latter)

So whats going to happen if there is some breaking news regarding the recent events during this recorded bulletin. They'll probably just simulcast FOX News Channel, but it will seem a little stupid for Sky News. They should just have at small temporary studio for live bulletins during studio switches, with one camera pointing to the presenter who is in front of the chroma blue/green screen, and just put the newsroom backdrop on that.

Funny you should say this, as I wondered whether it was CSO myself. The graphics didn't look very high-definition - almost like they were displayed on a screen, so I thought it might be a videowall/projection screen etc. Mind you, it looked a bit bigger than the screen they were using on Working Lunch.

Sorry - re-read my post and it is slightly ambiguous.

I meant that though the lack of shadow behind Julie made me think it WAS CSO, the funny look to the moving video made me think it WASN'T CSO but back-projected onto a real screen.

CSO = Chroma Key. There is no difference nowadays.

CSO was the term originally used by the BBC, Chroma Key was originally the US term.

It would make sense to change now. They've got all thses brand new facilities at sky news, and they not using them, for what is the biggest story to ever unfold on sky. We might even see this before the end of the week!!!

Great!! We might see a war by the end of the week!!

Do grow up.
I do not find the prospect of war thrilling or in the least bit joyful, and it's quite frankly sick to think that you could get excited about war breaking out this week.

Now to get back to the point of the thread. I can't see Sky rushing the relaunch forward. They've apparently put the date back to the 30th - but whether that's true or not remains to be seen.

I don't remember saying that I hoped that war would break out by the end of the week, I was impliying i hope that the sky news rebrand would occur by the end of the week. in an age where you or I could be called upon to serve our country, war does neither seem inviting, nor exciting. However, justice must provale.
