They should n't use white paper for the scripts in the studio.

It keeps reflecting off the very clean glass behind them, especially on the big wide shots and on the sports shot.

There is no reason why the scripts need to be white.

Scripts need to be white so they can be READ easily - that's why they are there. If they were a dark colour - black - that wouldn't reflect AND wouldn't be READABLE!

White paper is actually harder to read under studio lighting because of the glare. Light blue and green paper is often used as a substitute.

Also after the amount of money Sky have spent on the new set. Using a different printer/ink combination is just a small dip in the pond. I would n't take much to change the printers in the newsroom and the one in the studio used for printing out scripts to a different colour ink.

Well - after watching for a few days.

I like the lighting, and can see the benefit of the newswall. I like the newswally being used for branding on the 2 shots, though think the BREAKING NEWS in the background is a little melodramatic. The reflections in the glass wall aren't really that much worse than the ones in the N24 set, though possibly slightly more obvious because of the more contrasty set / desk / backing.

(The reverse shot of the anchors is very reminiscent of the original News 24 top shot in the first flaggy era - the hourly top shot was normally the gallery or the back of the presenters on-set)

It is a pity that the depth of field on the main shots hasn't been altered (exposure/ND) to blur the newswall and newsroom in the background a bit more, I do find the wall/newsroom very distracting with the multiple sources in it. There ideally needs to be a bit more separation of the newsroom and the presenters.

I am surprised that the lighting level on the journalists desks near the newswall is acceptable for Display Screen Equipment Health and Safety purposes. It looks very dodgy for a working environment.

I have seen a few reporter newswall sequences. They are OK - but the graphics have to be REALLY big, otherwise the graphics appear really blocky, and I haven't seen any real VT running in them. The shots also seem to have to be really wide otherwise you see blocks on the graphics, hence the reporter is quite weeny. They don't seem to be using the HDTV/HiRes computer graphics that the BBC use for Peter Snow's projected graphics. (The Beeb are also lucky working in 16:9 for normal gfx, as these make production for newswall shape screens a bit easier IMHO)

Also not sure I like seeing the reporter behind the main presenter before and after the newswall sequences.

Has anyone seen a conventional keyed inset used yet? I would have though that these won't work so well now the newsroom is so in-focus behind the main presenter shots.

Excuse me you lot!!!!! Everything I said was true!

The pics that someone mocked up were wrong! They pictured McCoy sitting on a desk in the newsroom with the video wall to one side (this is wrong!)

When the camera shots go wider and over the coming days and weeks you will see more of the pine wood panels with plasmas in!!!!! (So calm down - you are wrong again!!!)

The desk does have a black top and is sort of banana shaped!!! (I said this - you guys wrong again!!!!!!)

The green floor for keying was droped at the last minute because it didn't work as well as they had hoped!!!!

As for the different sources in the wall I was un-aware this was happening!!! I didn't say it wasn't going to happen I said I didn't think it would!!!!!!

So I think you should all shut up those who doubted me!!!! And to Sirreal who reckons 'ReLaunch Now knew very little, sorry mate but it's true'  all I can say is where did you crawl from, this is the first time I've seen you on the forum!!! Everything I said has come true, if it hasn't it means that those ideas were droped by Sky News' managment!!!!

I have given you a wealth of information and I had more, now I suggest that you all read the posts over the last few months and remember what I told you!!

Obviously politeness is not a requirement for Sky News employees.

Mark, the idea of them zooming out from the newsroom was actually my idea - RLN just said it would happen (sound familiar?)
RLN, I do recall you telling us the desk would be made from wood and that it would have lights coming DOWN from it. Where is this desk?

Pardon my stupidity by how can you 'drop' a floor at the last minute? Is the floor not a rather vital part of a studio?

Earlster - I can't see anything unoriginal about the Sky studio at all. Could you please tell me where you've seen it before? Channel 4 do not use a videowall in the same way, never have. IMO the studio is unique and very modern. If you don't like it then don't watch it.

If they did originally plan to have a green floor for keying, they must have been on some very dubious substances when they came up with the idea Wink Were they planning on keying in a picture of a load of clouds under them so it looked like they were suspended in mid-air???

Have we seen the new soft set area yet? (Oh yes there will be one). I think we will find this is where the wood and plasma screens are.

Hmmm. This sounds dangerously like that horrible News 24 soft area from a couple of years ago... Still, I'm sure it'll be better than that!

I have to say that, as much as I like the new studio, there are a couple of things that I don't like. The reflection in the window is pretty bad. I've tried to ignore it, but when you can see Kay Burley's hands typing on the computer behind Chris Rogers, it's a bit distracting! And the other thing is the very dull background for the side shots (sports/business etc). They desperately need to liven things up a bit, and that mirror wall is a nice idea gone badly wrong. The problem is that, at the angle at which they shoot it, it doesn't actually reflect anything other than the wall on the other side of the newsroom (and occasionally a tiny bit of the newswall). I can't believe they didn't think of this - I remember learing about angles of reflection in science classes when I was about 13!

Fair point c@t but there's no need to clamp down on people from saying what they personally don't like about the new set. If they have a fact wrong then feel free to correct them but if someone thinks it's 'grey and dull' then that's their opinion!

Agreed, but I think that saying that Sky are copying other channels is just wrong. I'd seriously argue that apart from the launch of tv news by the BBC, Sky News has been the most influencial thing on British TV news, and IMO it's actually well ahead of the other broadcasters when it comes to presentation/delivery and content.

Perhaps I'm just on-edge. We've waited so long for this relaunch and now that it does look truely impressive it does annoy me when people come and and say how they've copied everyone else.
