Sky News is pathetic at present

Does anyone else think Sky News is pathetic at present? I can't wait for it to come from a new studio. Will the channel be relaunched? eg, will it have a new logo/ DOG to go with the new set and some new titles?

I hope so as the 'headlines' bit and the 'top of the hour' is not really catching - not like News 24 and the pips etc.

By 'pathetic' I presume you mean in terms of presentation?
Yes, it is. Although the breaking news aston is excellent, if a little overused today.

In terms of news content the network has been excellent, despite being in temporary accomodation, the coverage of today's collapse of a block of flats and the Genoa rioting was excellent.
I had a quick look back at the presentation used during the election campaign and the astons used looked far better.

There will almost certainly be variations on the music and idents, for programmes such as Sunrise, Today and Live at Five. I expect Nine and Ten will share presentation styles, as before.

On the subject of the video wall...
Consider the fact that the video wall is to replace the bank of Tv monitors yet the studio is to be in the old 'soft end'.
This will mean that the video wall will not be able to be seen from the studio.
I would hazard a guess that the wall would be a giant plasma screen where presenters and reporters can illustrate things.
For example, during the fuel crisis, Sky had a correspondent stood in front of a chromakey screen and illustrating where delays were and where petrol wasn't. I would guess it would be used in that style.
The weather will perhaps be presentedd using the wall too.
Think of it as a giant BBC One News plasma screen, with a presenter/correspondent standing by it and illustrating a story.
I new DOG and logo will be introduced, my guess is at a small, rounded, blue square with generic font styles.

Comparing it to News 24 is pointless and very silly. Sky are currently in temporary studios and not using their graphics team to its full potential, as they are having new equipment installed.
News 24 is currently in fully finished studios, so making a comparison between the two at this time is wrong and pointless.

And don't forget. The last relaunch in 1998 was not totally finished. The end sting had not been created, and was only created after the relaunch had taken place.
So expect a few more cosmetic changes after the actual relaunch itself.

Ah, finally some good old speculation again - I was beginning to think everyone had stopped caring! I think you're right about the video wall being used for illustrating stories - that certainly fits in with the fact that they're going to be doing 'rehearsals' with it all August.

Are you sure the soft area doesn't have a line of sight to the back of the newsroom? It sounds like they're doing some fairly major building work, so it's possible that various walls etc might be taken out (that's if we're right about the open-plan set-up!).

So, go on then - what does everyone think will be the main features of the relaunch? I know we'll probably end up disapointed but, hey, it helps to pass the time!

The soft area is only seperated from the newsroom by a wall so that could be destroyed... probably!
I cannot think of any other reason that the presenters would need to rehe**** with a video wall, unless they were personally going to be using it.
Have a look at the CBS Evening News if you can. They have a video wall, it's not that big though, and badly placed. But that is only used to put pictures up, whereas Sky would (probably) be having presenters walking up and down the wall pointing to graphics and graphs etc.

I am certain whatever they are doing, they are doing it well and this will probably be the largest change we have seen to the Sky News studio.
I'm just curious as to how big the newsroom will be.
If you look at the plan of studio 2 then it could be rather big, we'll just have to wait I suppose!

I don't think Sky can let us down now, well they better not anyway.

Personally I've always been happy with how Sky News has looked over the years. The only one I didn't like was the 1998 - 2001 theme. They dropped a really good theme for it and I was very dissapointed when I switched on and seen it.

Roll on September 3rd. Not that long away now actually. Smile

when you guys say a 'video wall', what is it you mean? is it a wall of crt monitors, plasma screen (bearing in mind that they are usually 72' wide max size) or rear-projection screen?

apologies if this has been asked before.

A good example of a video wall in use can be found on some of the CNBC US programming. They have a big wall (roughly the same size as sky's monitor stack), and their presenters sometimes stand against it - it's mostly used to display graphs of share prices, with the presenter pointing to the relevant bits. They also do the weather forecast from there. I think this might well be the sort of thing that Sky have planned.

if its as big as you say then its most likely to be a projected image. there still isnt a domestic or commercially available plasma or crt screen that big.

slightly ot: will i get sky news as part of telewest?

It's made up of lots of smaller (flat) screens - standard videowall style. Not sure what sort of screens they are, though!

I know the CNBC screen you are talking about.
They actually have two of them I think. One of them is near to the Power Lunch studio and carries info on what is coming up, that one is also use for the weather. There is also a smaller screen near to the two stock/share editors, which has various uses. It was used to display all of the prices of telecoms stocks and was called 'The Telecom Wall' to the delight of the presenters... very odd.

Of coure, they already have two very large plasma screens...
