Just a thought about the lack of menu/countdown. Maybe it does exist but they're squeezing in an extra advert (after losing the money on and after Sept 11th)?

Do you think Sky News would be that desperate for ads?

Oh, wait, BSkyB! Wink

If they need to show additional ads why did they only start today? This doens't really make sence. Every ad brake is tailed by either a 30sec or 60sec promo for Sky Movies, well at least it is on sky news eire, this could be reduced or removed for additional ads if they really are stuck for cash.

Well, these are screen shots of a powerpoint presentation I created for a fictional news channel.

And I'm not 'blowing my own trumpet', but if you compare these with Sky News' graphic package, I would have said the Sky News package was created by a 16 year old.

But these were!

This looks like... when Sky News (astons) meets BBC News 24 (graphics) and DW-tv (sidebar).

As i said before, I like all the graphix, but the straps are a bit big, so...

below are images i have made with smaller versions of these straps.

The red curvey bit, is now aligned to the Sky News part of the Dog, not the whole clock included like at present.

Funny you should say that - the sidebar was actually based on DW news! So well spotted, although you don't win anything.

In the presentation, every graphic fits together like a puzzle because of the white lines. This was based on the Olympics graphics for Sydney 2000 and Atlanta 1996 I think.

What font did you use DAS for your graphix?

I knew someone would ask that. For the channel logo it has Humnst777, for the main text its Lucida Sans - which is a really nice, modern font.

Quite what I thought but its Sydney 2000 and Nagano 1998, both sets of graphics I love.

Well, Ive watched for a day before making a judgement and I have to say that overall im disappointed but I think it can be improved:

1) The gfx dont 'fit' properly yet. eg the weather timer underneath the logo is a different width.
2) The main Sky News logo on the hour seems to be very 'cheaply' animated - not much effort put into the main logo in comparrison to the globe background for example !
3) The 'L I V E' bit just HAS to go ! It is far too big. I also dont like the trashy effect given by the 'Sky News LIVE' animated gfx complete with 'whoosh' sound effect.
4) Astons are WAY TOO BIG !! I feel like I cant see the bloody screen sometimes on some reports - overkill or what !
5) 'WAR ON TERROR' red logo on left is again too big !

On another note, Sky seem to have gone back in time to 1995 when they used the 'curved split across screen' look on all channel logos - im surprised that they have done this as it is quite a dated look/effect !

All in all the onscreen look has a far less 'serious' look to it and looks much more 'flashy'. Compare it to the nicely animated on the hour CNN International logos and you have to admit that CNN looks to be the more credible news source.

Oh, and BTW, I think that Sky News looks great now.  The studio, the videowall are fab.  The graphics are still too big, and I'm not sure about that huge logo on the front of the desk, but on the whole it looks so fresh and vibrant.

I look at News 24 now and it seems quite dull in comparison.

Oh you little defector, you! I thought you'd never crack.

I do think the astons a too big and I guess that there will be a few tweaks to the graphics when the regular week team arrive tomorrow. I'm very glad to see those annoying video feeds leave, the replacement is far better, although they are still popping up occasionally.

It's a shame that programmes aren't getting unique looks, like they used to. I'm still hoping for a different look for News at Ten but realistically I doubt that'll happen. Shame the countdown has gone, that music would make a good countdown sequence.
