I found out from another web-site that the new sky news theme tune is the same as that used on WFSB 7 in Chicago, and is called The One And Only 5 by frank gari, however i can't seem to get on his web-site to confirm this, so you might want to look.

I'm sorry but it's kinda pathetic that Sky News use the same music that used for American local tv news (whose scores are imho notoriously bad)…can't they afford the get their own unique package?

Oh, and I just check Gari's site and the music they have for WSFB is different than the Sky News music -- did they recently update it?

That's because the information came from me...

Whoever saw that misread it. What I said is that the new Sky News music is a custom theme from Gari Communications. However, the futuristic ticker tape that's in the background of the Sky News music open is the same as the opeing theme bumper/bed that's used on both Gari's WFSB Package, Series 7, and The One and Only Package, Series 5.

If anyone wants me to put up RealPlayer files for comparison, I'll do so...

The Gari site is really good and worth a visit, but as its virtually entirely flash based, is there any way to extract the sound files from it?

Apologies for going off topic.

Sky's music is probably custom made, just like previous versions have been, with the exception of 1989. The music is great, I've really started to like it now and it sounds so much better in stereo (thanks Aaron!). But they really should've kept with the 1993 theme, it was so unique and I've managed to adapt the ident to the 1993 theme and it works really well, I'll put it up if anyone's interested.

Over here it seems that broadcasters can't keep music for more than a few years. Look at NBC in the USA, they've got the only trademarked sound in the world, the G-E-C notes of the 'NBC Chimes'. CNN will soon enough trademark their four notes, because they've been used since the year dot. That's why I can't like the BBC News themes - they're going to go out of date soon enough and they just will never remain for a long period of time, certainly not as long as NBC's or CNN's, or even CBS's. ITN have at least tried with the bongs, and Channel 4 have had their music since launch, so hats off to them.

Don't think there's a way to get the site in non-flash, although have a look around and there may be an option to turn it off somewhere.

Don't know how to extract the sound files from the site, but there are several other sites on the web featuring some cuts of various Gari themes, like TV News Themes or Southern Media's News Music Search Archive, or even Tristan's news.theme.scene. Of course you get to hear more cuts from each package on the official Gari site.

Once you have been on the garicomm site, and listened fully to the pieces you want, find the .swf files in Temporary Internet Files, rename them .mp3, and open them in an MP3 player. This should work, unless garicomm have locked the files.

The sky news theme is an original music piece composed exclusively for Sky television, even the breaking news stings and headline bubble are custon written by the same talented composer.
