Sky News has clinched a deal to appear on terrestrial TV for the first time. Its Sunrise breakfast show will be simulcast by Channel 5 from January 7. Under the ground-breaking deal, Channel 5 also has the right to switch to Sky News for breaking news.
Interesting development for Channel 5. The Beeb will now have some decent competition for their breaking news specials on terrestrial.

Hopefully this means the programme will be physically branded 'Sky news sunrise', with seperate idents and music.

Also a rather interesting development in the relationship between Channel 5 and ITN, I would have thought... Still - excellent news, although having seen the screen caps people have done on here from Sky News in recent months, I just hope they replace the new graphics, which suck.
Actually, if memory serves me correctly, didn't Sky News appear during TV-am towards the end of it's licence in the early 90's?

Good news to have three news organisations now broadcasting on terrestrial television - the report is here.
This would also fit with the fact that the ITN News Channel may be rebranded ITV News Channel...

As mentioned, interesting to note the relationship between ITN and C5 now. Maybe C5 had a tipoff about 'ITV News Channel'??
'And we welcome viewers of Channel Five who have just joined us. You're watching live, yes live pictures of a scuffle going on in our newsroom. We cross live there now to our reporter on the scene with the breaking story...'
Bloody hell, this was a bit unexpected! I wasn't even aware they were in talks.
Fantastic news, though.
Very important breakthrough for Sky News and very pleasing to hear.
Sky News has indeed broken into terrestrial TV before, by means of TV-AM News.
It's a shame it's only 6-6.30am, but the idea of them switching during breaking news is very interesting indeed.
One worrying this is, what will become of 5 News? It's still done by ITN but if 5 are going to be switching during breaking news to Sky News and not ITN produced coverage, surely there is some twisting of the rules here.
I suspect the ITC will have something to say about this.
The catch is probably whether it has been produced
for
a channel. The ITC probably allow Sky News as it is simply being streamed - it is not a production for Channel 5, just a simulcast. Therefore, Channel 5 probably get round it by using ITN as their channel news provider, and Sky News as a streamed broadcast (maybe this period is considered as Channel 5 being off-air?)
It makes you wonder who would win the Channel 5 news contract if it were up for grabs tomorrow though, doesn't it!
