WTC? Come on matey - everyone was showing the pictures live, as it happened!

So how did the BBC manage to miss the collapse of both towers?
And why didn't the female anchor actually say that a second plane had just hit? Instead of saying 'it looks like the other tower is on fire'.

ITV News managed better coverage than the BBC on the 11th!

Beeb didn't miss collapse of either tower. They were restricted by which live pictures they were allowed to use for legal reasons which have been explained on here exhaustedly.

On that note, Night Night Peeps Smile zzzzzz

If we're talking the Stone case .. did Sky have an interview with the inmate who Stone confessed to ....er no ... the BBC did.
Also I would have thought it's good that the BBC check facts as it has a reputation of being correct .. rather than first and wrong.

Apparently they were not showing live pictures during the collapse of either tower, showing prerecorded stuff.

The BBC do appear to be limited in the USA. That's why Sky got live pictures of that bus incident well before the Beeb, and why Sky spoke to people on the scene well before yourselves. Although there was far too much coverage of that.

Mr P, you are indeed a BBC employee, are you not? Yes? Good. Let me give you some tips to pass on to the management as to how you can improve News 24.

1) Presenters are allowed personalities. Let them have a chat to each other now and again, and be more dependent on the presenters, they aren't just there to read the autocue, they're there to link the whole programme together. Make better use of them.

2) For god's sake bring the sports presenter into the main studio.

3) None of this 'we'll bring you more on that as we get it' lark. Report it and bloody well stay with it if it's important, leave the graphic up on the screen and leave it there until you have phoned someone up or have a reporter in the studio to talk about the story that's just broken

4) Your graphics do not have to match what is happening on screen. Put a breaking news graphic up in the middle of a press conference if you have breaking news, don't wait until the whole lot has finished until you report it

5) Give the presenters a break. 3 hours of news can't be a great deal of fun. Give them a little lighthearted story at the end so they can sign off looking happy.

6) Get them to chat to the business and sports presenters. Not just thank them and then move on to the next story. Just have a bit of a chat.

7) More famous name please! I've seen Moira anchoring News 24 before now. Do and ITN News Channel and get some of the more well established BBC presenters on

The key word is RELAX! It's a 24 hour channel, watching 30 mins is tough without falling asleep or wanting to turn off, simply because the presenters may as well be stuck behind a sheet of ice. It's the friendly banter and relaxed atmosphere that draws people to Sky, something the BBC has tried to emulate (and failed at the same time).

So there you go. 7 easy steps to getting News 24 in a position to challenge Sky.

Just like Sky got a letter and semi-interview from Stone himself.

It is good that the BBC check facts, Sky check facts, but they report them at the same time. The BBC collate all of the fact together and then report them in one big burst, whereas Sky report each fact as it comes in, which makes for far more interesting and up to date viewing.

Nice ideas Chesh, but the thing you have to remember is that News stations are not designed for people to be permanently tuned in to. The vast majority of Viewing Public aren't like you or I, they 'surf' the buttons.

If you want 'loud & in your face', turn to Sky
If you want 'accuracy first & foremost' turn to the Beeb.

I know that's a huge generalisation, but I'm wacked & really should go to bed now.

But that's what thousands of pounds worth of research has proven... Joe public turn to the Beeb for major stories - that's a fact & no getting away from it, whether World, N24, Net1, Radio or whatever. Mr public know they will get accuracy & unbiased opinion on all stories.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but I really am knacked tonight. Nighty night zzzzzzzz

You're right, it doesn't make sense. If it made sense then News 24 would have the highest viewing figures amongst news channels for this week. It doesn't. Sky does.

Also, accuracy hmm... as I've said Sky had all of the facts about the Stone case well before the BBC, and the BBC actually appeared to be relying on Sky to find out what had happened.

No, news channels are not designed to always be on, when did I say it should be? I said they should have a more relaxed atmosphere because at present the majority of news channel watchers do have news channels on for more than 30 mins, because we haven't reached a point where news channels are replacing national bulletins. But the BBC should be taking a calmer approach to news, because quite frankly it's boring at the moment.

And as for unbiased... hehe, don't make me laugh. As I've said time and time again, Sky were found to be the most balanced news source during the 1997 election. No idea about 2001 because I'm not aware any studies have been done into it.

Yes, I'd agree that the BBC is an impressive news operation but if I want to know what is happening in a large important story then I certainly won't watch it.

On a slightly different note, did anybody see s news last night, they had about 3 different sports presenters in the space of four hours. Something that also amused me, was when the presenter in the earlyhours was presenting the bullitin in the same place as the sports presenter. So when they cut to the pre-recorded sports bullitin, the background did not change.

The Russian plane crash was not broken first on News 24. I saw it on Sky News first before turning to news24 a few mins later to see it being broken their, turning to CNN just after id seen it on N24 it was just being broken. Fox News had it around 10 minutes later.

I dont know how people can say BBC News 24 broke it first, it was definatly Sky News.

Im also fed up of people saying Sky News has gone down hill with its new graphics. As far as im conserned it is the quality of the news and live coverage which makes it the best news channel (and the 11:45 paper review).

Im getting used the new graphics even and I dont mind them anymore too!
