As for the early "UK" channels - UK Gold and UK Living, didn't Thames Television have an interest in both of these stations...I know the BBC and Flextech were involved from a very early stage - but I'm sure Thames was involved...as it was in an explanation of why The Bill still showed on UK Gold after Thames sold on their share.

IIRC, UK Gold was a venture between Thames and (what was then) BBC Enterprises and as such was supposed to be about 50% Thames material and 50% BBC.

I think that then Thames sold their share in UK Gold to Flextech when Pearson bought them out.

The slogan was "Sky - No Turning Back"

That's it.

Now you mention it, I remember thinking what an intimidating and frankly odd slogan that was.

I mean, you wouldn't go and buy something from Marks and Sparks and find printed on the reciept: Returns Policy - YOU'VE BOUGHT IT NOW. TOUGH.

I'm sure it was meant to apply to the Sky operation, but the idea that the first thing a customer would get dropping through their letter box after giving their credit card details to Sky is "SKY - NO TURNING BACK" is a little questionable in the marketing world, surely.

IIRC the slogan 'No Turning Back' wasn't used until around 1994/95 when Sky was offering a free 30 day trial of the equipment meaning that once you had tried Sky for 30 days you wouldn't turn back to 'ordinary' TV. This ad was from that period:

Yes and they were broadcast from Thames TV - UK Gold from Thames in Euston (until they left the building and it moved to central London) and UK Living from Thames in Teddington (using the old ITV TX kit that was moved from Euston).

I used to work with the bloke who was looking after UK Gold on New Years Eve 1992 - everyone else closed down Thames and had a party, he was still at work looking after UK Gold Sad
