BSkyB is to launch a new video-on-demand service that will allow viewers to access a range of programmes through Sky+ boxes as the satellite broadcaster announced that more than 2m homes now have the recorders.

The new VoD service, which will launch later this year, will be available to more than 1m Sky+ and Sky HD customers through the use of additional recording capacity on the hard drive of newer boxes.

The service will allow viewers to choose from a selection of the week's top programmes on demand.

Finally catching up with Telewest then.

The theory sounds ok (just) but say ive filled my 40gb Sky + disk with recordings I want will this new service blast away a proportion of my recordings for the stuff that it will download just incase I want to watch it 'on demand'???

This seems a really stupid idea from Sky and hasn't really been thought through properly.

The only true VOD service is via cable and it works great.

Oh so that's what the second half of my hard drive is for that I can't use!

Yes, this is more on a par with Top Up TV Anytime than NTL: Telewest, recording programmes direct to your Sky+ box.

It's also got less space that TUTV - so will have less programmes on offer. I would suspect though the quality of programming should be better.

Surely though in the not to distant future Sky could launch a service similar to BT Vision, allowing Sky viewers with Sky Broadband to access to true on demand via the internet.

I think it'll only be for people with the newer 160G boxes, with 80G for Personal Planner recordings, and 80G for on-demand services.

Glad to hear this, I know I will probably make a lot of use of it.

I'm not so sure. Why would Sky reserve half the storage space on 80Gb boxes?

I'd be happy with the extra storage space in place of VoD, right enough.

Will prices be put up for this?

So it's a ripoff of TUTV Anytime from the sounds of it - programmes are recorded to your drive overnight and then you choose what you want from the selection.

Whereas BT Vision has the upper hand over all (?) VoD services at present. You have total choice over what you want to watch, when you want it - then you get the normal freeview channels as well.
BT Vision is gonna rule Smile Getting it in early February Smile

No, I don't think it would download programmes overnight, there are too many channels. I think it would be a matter of selecting shows from the box office menu and then it downloads them live. Might be a while until it launches, as the current software doesn't support this.
