Even if they did take the channels off-air from satellite, it's just leaving the Sky platform, there's no reason why they can't stay on Astra... though they'd need presumably need some sort of encryption that only Virgin, BT etc can access.

Regrettably mass market satellite receivers with CAMs simply don't exist in the UK, thanks to Sky's success
at making their VideoGuard encrypted (and crippled to) receivers de-facto, otherwise there'd be some mileage
in going DTH on their own encrypted platform.

Just wondering if Discovery will just go off the epg but continue to broadcast, its more likely I think they will just put up a message like Canal Digital did when they and Discovery had similar issues over there.

I have to admit though if it's a line feed which I expected it to be then why would virgin media customers be seeing the ticker?

Well, they do EXIST, as I have one. And you can go into Maplin and buy one, and there's lots for sale on Amazon. But I know what you mean- they aren't common, and you won't find them anywhere mainstream like Currys and Argos. And there's no NDS CAMs either even if you do have one.

Because there's still only one output for the channel, reglardless of whether it's sent down the line of over satellite.

Yes, though with a bit of rewiring, and purchasing of extra DAs, it might be possible to provide a split output, but it's not something instantly possible, they probably thought the requirement would never be needed !

Indeed. It's not impossible, but without high street household name support it's not going to happen to make it viable for a broadcaster. To be honest, Freesat struggle to get their message across

Eurosport slightly ruining the Australian Open win there by talking about this dispute over scenes of Federer celebrating. Could have waited a few minutes lads.

No - exactly the right time to do it. I'm surprised they didn't run the ticker over match point.

One thing - why direct everyone to moan to @skyhelpteam? That's the technical supports twitter address - better would be to tweet the corporate one - much further up the boardroom chain.

Ran it a few times during the match, over replays.

Someone at Sky has to read and respond to tweets to the @SkyHelpTeam account. The corporate one is probably run by the press office and likely isn't monitored.

But it won't be a mass market receiver if it's being used by cable head ends, it'll be a professional one.

They could just use BISS or similar encryption

Oh, I agree, but you wouldn't use Astra 28E for purely distribution, would you, cheaper to rent space on a non DTH satellite, or are you thinking of short term, until something more suitable can be arranged ?

As I said earlier, I'd doubt they'd go off air totally, they'd want to be able to get back up quickly when it's resolved,

I thought it was the wrong time to do it, immediately after the win, where all focus should have been on the celebration itself. Just thought it was very jarring and did not help me empathise with their cause.

Well no, for all the reasons Noggin mentioned earlier.

But if they did then it would be a temporary solution until it returns (which it will eventually)

Pissing me off seeing Discovery whining about being kicked off Sky when they still haven't fixed their own Eurosport Player which has been broken on Samsung TVs since before the US Open.

Did you tweet? Or let Eurosport know?

Yes and I wasn't the only one. Ended up cancelling my subscription and only renew as the £19.99 offer was to good to turn down, but find having to cast things a pain.
