Discovery are now promoting their #KeepDiscovery tweets on Twitter and they're getting quite a response. A lot of people want out of Sky.

I wonder how many people will actually cancel outright? A number of subscribers are tied into contracts (usually 12 month term), and Sky will probably be offering incentives to stay like they usually do when people cancel.

I can see it being resolved, but not this week. Discovery needs Sky more than the other way round. Their channels are going to take a massive dent in ratings once they disappear from Sky, especially the lesser watched channels, such as Science, History and Shed.

Worth noting a couple of Discovery's channels, I think Shed and Home & Health have moved up the Sky EPG quite significantly too.

I thought at first that Discovery would be taking all the impact from this but now I'm not too sure, I think Sky and it's public relations could be dented quite considerably by this.

Yes, because customer services deal with the channel contracts.

Maybe Sky will think in future before they overbid for football!

Do we REALLY know if it because sky over bid on the football? we dont know the deal between Discovery and sky and maybe sky not happy with it. Sky knows any long term contract may not be worth it.

Surely the fact they're trying to cut costs to make up for what they've paid is a sign they've overbid?

Surely the fact they're trying to cut costs to make up for what they've paid is a sign they've overbid?

But if they'd underbid and lost the subscribers the football brings they might be cutting costs to a greater extent.

It's just a sign that the retention of Premier League is prioritised over other services.

Discovery are obviously trying to cover the costs bidding for the Olympics has brought them, but holding Sky hostage over their channels isn't a great way of doing business. I can't imagine hundreds of thousands of people leaving Sky just because they can no longer access the Discovery network. Close to a £1bn for a suite of channels that realistically people only watch occasionally does seem very steep.

Discovery have said they aren't asking for any more than Sky have paid them in the past. We don't know if that £1bn figure quoted by Sky is what they've already paid or are being asked to pay, and whether it's for a year, or two, or five, or longer...

As Sky keep deleting my posts over on their forum, I will post on here.

According to Radio Times 6.7 million viewers watch Discovery channels per week on Sky.

Sky are offering Discovery a price which is less than 10 years ago. That would say to me they are trying to save money. I think Sky are underestimating the number of people that watch Discovery. Sky think it's all about football and game of thrones.

Let us see what happens, I think it would be a mistake to allow the channels to be switched off on Sky. A less than 10 year old price is not a fair price, considering it now includes Eurosport, which I assume it did not 10 years ago.

Sky say Discovery channels are not as good, which I would agree with to an extent, however, Discovery channel and Eurosport are two solid channels, without seeing the figures it's hard to say if Discovery are being greedy or Sky are being tight, but if those channels get switched off, Sky will lose many customers, and Discovery will lose many viewers.

I would guess that Sky know exactly the number of people that watch Discovery.

I'm in agreement with those who say Discovery are severely exaggerating the value of their channels and brand. They have essentially become full of Storage Wars rip off shows from the US, i.e. shows about American people doing stuff. Even Animal Planet, which seems to show a constant loop of Tanked (where some guys go round installing fish tanks).

How would Sky know exactly who watches Discovery?

Half of this is people who see Discovery as a major channel, if you were going to get Sky, and they said Discovery was not included, it might put you off, even if you were not sure what shows the channel had these days, or even if these shows would interest you, the channel has reputation, as does Eurosport.

I think a lot of people want an excuse to ditch Sky. This may be it. So many people have Sky and don't even watch the content they pay for, I have had conversations with people, who continue paying for Sky, believing their subscription includes channels which are free. I had it just the other day, someone was saying they had sky and they could get BBC HD channels. No mate, those are free. Very Happy I should add Sky even advertises free channels trying to make it look as if these channels are part of the sub. Unless you read the small print you would believe it as well. Not forgetting as well that Sky is so full of crap these days as well. I would say Fox, Sky Atlantic and maybe Sky Sports are the only decent channels. Everything else can be found elsewhere.

Sky is not what it was 10 years ago either, back then it was one of the only ways to watch extra content, now I can go to many different places to get what Sky show, even Now TV which is Sky. Very Happy
