Damn, if true. Would make a worthy competitor to BBC Four on Freeview and Freesat.

Didn't they make an effort to remove the Sky branding from anything that was free-to-air because they wanted to ensure the Sky name was a premium brand?

Yeah. Sky Three also had a reputation of having less than stellar programming that didn't do the Sky name justice.

Whatever it is, this seems like a reversal of their previous aims.

Sky are hoping to be brought, so maybe it is a play to appease competition complaints, and a way to strengthen the cultural positioning for the brand?

It should really be SKY 1 in my opinion. They use Sky 1 as free to air channel for their sports coverage anyways.

Could/would it go on Freeview I wonder...?

Not necessarily. Without reading the full article I can't be sure, but it's possible that they would give it a new brand if they made it free-to-air, which is presumably being considered in an effort to increase ratings and to make the channel commercially viable.

Pick and Challenge do great for them, Real Lives could too.

Haha!

Make their highest rated and flagship entertainment channel free-to-air... not a chance.

A commercial FTA alternative to BBC Four would be welcome. Would they remove Sky News for it though on Freeview or more likely Pick?

They could rebrand it back to Artsworld, which was its original name before it was bought by Sky.

Sky is looking at taking Sky Arts free-to-air as it weighs up the options for the future of the channel.

Broadcast understands that the pay-TV business is in the early stages of a review process for the Urban Myths and Portrait Artist of the Year broadcaster.

Among the options being considered is a relaunch of the brand as a free-to-air offering, in what would be Sky’s second free-to-air entertainment channel after Relic Hunter broadcaster Pick.

Indies could welcome a free-to-air move, as it would make their programmes accessible to a wider audience and potentially allow for bigger budgets.

Meanwhile, increasing its free-to-air portfolio could serve as a marketing play for Sky, allowing the business to drive viewers to its pay-TV channels.

Sky Arts is a 24-hour channel that spans music, arts and culture. It has a weekly reach of 1m and a monthly reach of 5.5m. The brand was previously distributed across two channels - Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2 - but were merged into one offering in 2015.

Another option being discussed internally would see the channel ramping up its participation in the arts.

Sky is currently researching how users interact and engage with Sky Arts, which is headed by Phil Edgar-Jones.

Sky undertakes periodic reviews of its channels, some of which have led to significant restructures in commissioning.

Sky Living has tightened its focus on acquisitions while following a February 2017 review, Sky 1 veered away from factual programming to focus on entertainment with shows such as Primal Media’s Carnage and Znak & Co’s Revolution.

Earlier this week, Sky revealed that Sky 1 and Sky Living director Adam MacDonald would leave the broadcaster amid a restructure that will cut standalone channel head roles from its entertainment division. Edgar-Jones has kept his role.

A British PSB ARTE would add to the portfolio of UKTV. It would shake up Sky Arts in the process.
