So, presumably this means no more Premier League matches in 3D?

Sky Corporate Blog posted:
So today we’re announcing the latest development in our plans for 3D. From June Sky 3D is going fully on demand. From the latest 3D movie premieres like Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to the very best in natural history with documentaries like Natural History Museum Alive, it will all be ready and waiting for our customers to view whenever it suits them.

Not too bothered personally, especially since I've never been able to really see 3D in any of its guises (and no, I don't wear glasses). I've always been more impressed by 4K TVs than 3D TVs in a shop

Well atleast Sky's finally making 3D on-demand content, the only thing Sky On Demand ever needed.

It stopped at the end of last season, as far as I am aware they haven't shown any Premier League matches in 3D this season. (or any other sport for that matter).

It was just a gimmick that never took off.

No surprise really, as 3D was largely a gimmick to sell new TVs and there's now 4K to sell new TVs. Moving it to On Demand is probably more cost efficient considering the limited market. I wonder if Sky have any plans to move some of their movie channels to On Demand.

Most if not all of the movies that are on Sky Movies and friends are already On Demand. In fact the On Demand for the movies is pushed at every opportunity, that and the Sky Store.

Of course, not a lot of good if you don't have Broadband internet in the first place, so if that's the case you'll just get the basic Anytime service.

Indeed. Though unlike 3D (which could be added to existing hardware via a software update - as broadcasters used the non-HD 3D Side-By-Side format) 4K will need a box upgrade.

Now that Sony have launched a proper 2/3" 3-chip 4K broadcast camera capable of using decent sport lenses, I think we'll see some movement quite quickly in Sky launching 4K Sport and Movie/Drama services. Sky's OB providers have already built 4K-capable trucks (though have had to use the slightly frankencamera-esque Live F55 and F65 single-sensor cameras until now)

With new 4K boxes Sky could also offer 4K On-Demand (a la Netflix and Amazon Instant)

Like Sky Movies Box Office these days, if you press Box Office on the Sky remote you get the option of Sky Store and then Box Office, and if you watch Box Office these days all the promos are for Sky Store instead. According to Sky's own press release at least 70% of Sky customers have connected boxes. I believe if any linear channels are to go first then surely it'll be Box Office. I have only been a Sky customer for about a year now and I can't believe how many linear NVOD channels Box Office still has, and that there are only two in HD. Its days have to be numbered.

I suppose of those 30% which are not connected, many will be older SD boxes, hence why SBO is mostly SD nowadays. I think most of the HD Box Office channels went when Sky made them available for the BBC to use for the Olympics (and then Channel 4 for the Paralympics).

Sky Arts 2 is also closing.

I wonder if the closure of 3D and Sky Arts 2 is to cut costs on linear distribution?
