It would never work for ITV to air an event that involves them going head to head at exactly the same time as the BBC.

In the case of Wimbledon, I'm not sure ITV would want it even if it was tuppence. Too unpredictable, too long, mostly in daytime, vast swathes of it doesn't rate particularly well.

I suspect ITV have probably benefitted in daytime over the last couple of weeks from Wimbledon airing on the BBC.

No everything seems to be the same or lower for ITV daytime. Even The Chase hasn't been boosted.

Wimbledon on ITV is a non-starter due to the open-ended timing. It is interesting though that ITV don't use ITV2 to show displaced programmes in the way the BBC does in these situations. For example, the FA Cup final (I think) recently went into extra time, displacing an audition episode of Britain's Got Talent, which got delayed by about an hour when it could have just been moved to ITV2.

Well that's down to the fact ITV have advertisers not to piss off and rate significantly lower on ITV 2. It's not the slightest bit surprising.

Yes, the advertising rate card for a 30 second slot is substantially higher on ITV than on ITV2. Airtime around BGT is sold based on it airing on the main channel where it is capable of gaining an audience of about 10m. National campaigns are planned well in advance based on the big shows like BGT airing on the main channel. Put it on ITV2 and it would probably get about 2m. That's a lot of unhappy advertisers.

Because ITV aren't stupid. The BBC would delay a show of that magnitude rather than move it.

No, it might have been a go'er in the days when Channel 4 was 'ITV 2' in everything but name, and indeed
you might remember the two channels covered athletics in the same manner that BBC 1 and 2 covered 'long form' sports.

I've always wondered what ITV 1 and C4 would be like today, if the relationship they had 1982 to 92, had been retained ?

Wouldn't be surprised if ITV had dumped their regional responsibilities on C4 in that case, if they'd merged the same way they had.

Going way off topic but all the issues with the licence fee and C4/C5 not being big enough to really challenge for the big events (though I suspect C4 could give the Six Nations the Test Cricket treatment if they wanted too) that there is an issue with ITV now being nationalised and there not being at least 3-4 companies within the network competing against each other.

It would have got lower audience figures on ITV2 (particularly if it was up against an FA Cup Final...) and advertisers will have paid ITV1 rates and expect ITV1 audiences if they've bought slots in BGT.

Of course there's an argument that its the Premier League highlights deal (worth £204million) that is costing the BBC so much of its live portfolio.

I disagree. Football is the number one sport by miles so whatever else it has BBC Sport will be judged on its football output. The Premier League deal gives it loads and loads of content and it also rates exceptionally well. It's all very well saying they should go for the England rights but they're not available now - and even if they were, they're now sold separately from the rights for qualifiers (the rights of which are currently shared between ITV and Sky) so you'd have to buy them as well or all you'd get are friendlies, certainly not "big events that bring the nation together".

As for BBC2 and ITV2, of course the Beeb don't just fling everything onto BBC2 when coverage overruns, workaday shows like The One Show move but not stuff like Strictly, 'stEnders or Doctor Who, because it's a total waste of money flinging them out against high rating sport.

The trouble is they pay way over the odds for the Premier League highlights when there are no other bids on the table, and Match of the Day arguably benefits the Premier League more than it does the BBC. That said there is no denying it rates very well, but considering the online argument is used to close BBC3 they get little from them in that regard, although at least from the 2016 season they won't have to wait until Tuesdays to put highlights on the iPlayer.

One area where this deal will help the BBC slightly is that inevitable weekend where the FA Cup and Six Nations clash, although I'm sure ITV will not be wanting their broadcast partners scheduling an FA Cup fixture against their coverage.
