The Rugby World Cup is usually sold two tournaments at a time, and it usually works out that one of those two tournaments is fairly unattractive due to the time differences, which is possibly what has put off Sky until now. It will almost certainly be the same for the next rights with the 2019 tournament in Japan and 2023 likely to be in Europe or South Africa.

Wimbledon next for a joint BBC/ITV deal.
Makes sense. One court on the BBC - One court on ITV/ITV4, plus both going around the outside courts.
Plus in John Inverdale ITV have a ready made anchor for their coverage...

No, but short of a shock we would expect them to do so now.
Re regional coverage on ITV, the last time UTV did so for a rugby match was the 2007 World Cup. By the time 2011 came along the sports department at UTV (such as it was) had been effectively disbanded so they didn't bother.

Is there any confirmation about Irish rights? RTÃ holding on?

The Wimbledon one is more likely to the be the FTA/pay TV solution. Doubt ITV would give over their schedule to it either with the BBC airing the compition at the same time, it wouldn't make any sense.
Other ones I could see happening are the Beeb working with Channel 4 for Olympics rights from 2016. And sharing Premier League highlights with the BBC doing Saturday and Channel 5 doing Sundays.

Of course there's an argument that its the Premier League highlights deal (worth £204million) that is costing the BBC so much of its live portfolio.
I honestly think the BBC would be better off giving up the highlights rights, retaining the FA Cup and going after the England rights which have always done better on the BBC than they have on ITV. Effectively going back to the 2001-2004 arrangement. This would allow the BBC to retain/regain their 'big events that bring the nation together'.

Are the highlight mandatory to free to air?

The Premier League is a big commitment for the BBC but it provides a lot of content.
I'm certain ITV will want the FA Cup when it comes up for tender again in 2018. It seemed to be sacrificed to bolster their bid to retain European football. They will want some form of club football again I'm sure.

Doubt it - it doesn't really divive that well and as Jon said a pay-TV split would probably work better with Centre/Court 1 + Brits on BBC, others on pay-TV. Would be a huge shame though to lose FTA multi-court coverage - the BBC have added so much to their coverage of such events in recent years and although the vast majority of viewing is still the TV broadcast, removing that choice of court (or in the Olympics case, sport) really does make it look like a very limited offering.
I think Wimbledon also know how crucial the BBC is to the status of their event - they only have to look at the ratings for The Ashes to see that.

(my bold) is pretty much how the Eurosport/ITV coverage of the French Open works.
It limits ITV somewhat when there are more than one Brit playing simultaneously. As happened at Wimbledon several times this year.
