Something similar to this was posted previously - The Chase Russia with massive stick mic and the presenter is clearly struggling to keep everything off the floor here:

Lots of "could bes" but:
1. The podium could be just a prop.
2. Presenter choice for mic.
3. Sound engineer choice.
4. Producer choice for the show look.

Personally I'd go for a radio and have the handheld hidden on set as a backup.

Given that the contestants are wearing DPA-like headset mics, I suspect the presenter may not have wanted to wear one, so they went with a stick instead?
