I doubt many people minded, though, because of Helen and the theme tune.
Of course, following "0898-gate" (copyright UKGameshows.com), Quiz Call was "picked by the fickle finger of fate to survive" (also copyright UKGameshows.com) - filling the early hours of Channel 5's weekend schedules for another two years.
And by the time C5 switched to SuperCasino, Quiz Call's owners had started producing Brain Box for UTV, which lasted until February 2011. They wouldn't give up, would they?
(Although Brain Box *was* hosted by the lovely Carmel Thomas and the even lovelier Danielle Fearnon - both of Sit-Up fame, lest we forget - so it wasn't all bad.

Sport on Friday was rather a weird thing, wasn't it? Sometimes featured racing, from late in the Flat season and then the jump season, but the extent of the latter was reduced in the last couple of years after Channel 4 won the Cheltenham contract. I can remember watching bobsleigh on one of the very last editions.

There was a interactive gaming/quiz boom in the mid 00s. I was a huge fan of Avago in the early days, now that was unique idea for a channel. And there was Friendly TV (I didn't enjoy much because of the 'comedy of errors' reputation). Nation277/217 was great as well, it tested waters for new TV formats like Flipside TV (later picked up by Channel 4 and Paramount Comedy 2). Sadly Avago/Friendly/Nation paved the way for pointless interactive quiz channels like mainstream ones ITV Play and Channel 4's Quiz Call. At the one stage it even took over British TV like the late night slots on many channels. The phone in scandals of 2007 ended the quiz TV boom and from then on it was outpowered by bingo, rolultete, psychic and babe channels.

Quiz Call probably only survived more because Channel 4 sold it and got out not long before everything in that genre of programming went totally belly up. It later left the EPG not longer after Channel 4 sold it but Channel 5 wanted a schedule filler as above. If it had been left with Channel 4 it would probably have just been closed when Ofcom's investigation was announced, though it didn't stop Channel 4 having to ultimately apologise for the channel's behaviour.
Ostrich Media, which created Quiz Call, was ultimately sold to iTouch who were later bought by UTV.
Well they're here tonight. Please welcome Carmel Thomas and Danielle Fearnon to the stage

It's amazing how many of those late night phone in quiz shows there were around 2006/7 and as soon as the premium rate phone in scandal was broke. All gone in a flash.
I used to have them on in the background when I was on my computer because I never slept during my teenage years. As sad as that sounds....I remember Glitterball and The Mint mostly.

We all keep rawlplugs and balacavas in our handbags though, who knows when there's emergency DIY that needs doing, or when we impulse decide to rob a bank?

For ten years, Yorkshire television produced the monthly documentary strand, "First Tuesday". It went out after news at ten, on the first Tuesday of every month, hence the title. Replaced in September 1993, partly, with Network First.

Great way to spend Saturday morning, trawling through this thread.
Yes, loved this show. It's a shame there's not of CBBC oldies on YouTube like The Biz and Out of Tune!
I always used to enjoy It'll Never Work on CBBC - great use of a bit of Depeche Mode as the theme tune too!

I think the biggest scam about those phone-in quizzes was the pretence that there was nobody calling in, thus encouraging people to feel as if they were the only person to figure the answer out.
I know people here have a lot of love for some of the personalities involved, but let’s not forget the fact that these shows were fundamentally making money dishonestly, and usually from people who weren’t necessarily savvy with what they were doing.
