Classic shows you remember, but the public might not (July 2017)

Must have been - what I've called Computer Channel appears to have actually been called .tv (without rodent cam), but there was a Computer Channel in the BSB days which apparently wasn't aimed at the public.

No, you're partly right. The Computer Channel was the original name for .tv and was on Sky in the mid-late 90s.

Wasn't there a channel that showed fish swimming around in a large fish tank during its interludes?

Wasn't that what GMTV2 showed leading up to its actual launch?

Interestingly GMTV2, or the current equivalent actually still exists. Only it was moved to the CITV channel and uses their branding, so looks no different to the rest of the channel, the fact a programme starts at 9:25 is the only real remaining vestige of it, along with the fact some shows are part of the 6-9:25 schedule that don't appear elsewhere (presumably as their rights are only part of the breakfast franchise), especially at weekends when it's simulcast with ITV.

Ah, the Simply channels! There was a whole network of them at one point - Simply Music, Simply Einstein, Simply Shopping, Simply Nostalgia.

Simply Money was where Martin Lewis started out as well.

That's right there was quite a few Simply Channels around at the time. Although I think Einstein was an independent channel Einstein.tv before they took it over. Seemed to be a fascination at the time of using .tv in the channel name Very Happy

I'm pretty sure it was one of those Money channels that launched, can't remember which one though.

I've just watched Series 2, Episode 1 and can't find the reference you mention.

I remember it. Think it was pre credits.

Ah yes, between the credits and (c).

Was that the first (and only) time a change of actor/actress was alluded to during a TV series? Don't recall it's ever been done before or since.

Also has there ever been any crossover of characters in shows? I seem to recall that only happening once with a character appearing in Footballers Wives and ending up in prison on Bad Girls?

I believe they did in The Fresh Prince...

I remember which Sky channel it was now, it was Ocean Finance TV. They'd even have a caption on screen at 6am in the morning to say the fish were asleep and to check back later. Very Happy

It's documented here: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4608

I bet nobody remembers GMTV2 or the original format of ITV2 either, though it was at a time when hardly anyone had access to the channel. Similar to when BBC Choice and Knowledge were new and putting out interesting original content- but nobody saw it.

The first episode of that got ten million viewers, thrashing Brian Conley on ITV and being Vic and Bob's biggest audience by absolutely miles, clearly everyone was very excited about it. But the ratings plummeted, alas, and the second series was flung about all over the place, watched by nobody.

A bit of a shame, as I liked it, and in many ways we can see it as a forerunner of the Doctor Who revival,

Loved those titles and the music.

The titles and music were excellent and to me sounded like it could accompany an old James Bond film. To add to Steve Williams post the music was composed by Murray Gold who went on to do the score for every series of Doctor Who that has been broadcast since and I actually watched the first episode and featured a pre doctor who David Tennant.

Speaking of remakes. I think I was the only person who liked the Martin Clunes remake of Reggie Perrin and was disappointed they didn't at least finish it off with a one-off special.

I actually was going to post that alongside my last post about Vic & Bobs remake of Randall and Hopkirk but I liked that as well and I thought it was a shame they didn't finish it with another series or a special.

I've just been looking through videos of the early days. Interesting advert for the original line-up of programming, imagine a news programme hosted by John Suchet and a talk show hosted by Trevor McDonald on ITV2 nowadays! Wide Angle sounds interesting though. It's like Backstage, one of those programmes that I would have actually been interested in seeing but didn't survive the early days of digital TV…

I can't help but think if they'd held on till digital TV was more commonplace, these original ideas might have done well once there was actually people able to see them. Sadly by the time digital was widely watched, these channels had already gone more downmarket and populist.

Certainly what I've seen of the original formats of ITV2 and BBC Choice and Knowledge are superior to anything they were chucking out even by the time we got digital in 2001. And they went further downhill after that.

My first thought when I read this was that Bravo(?) had a test card with a live action fish tank in the middle.
