Shaw featured in an outtake on It'll Be Alright on the Night (from memory, AOTN 5) when he introduced an edition of Police 5 as follows, after his autocue had failed:
"Good evening. One of the hardest crimes to detect is that of a stuck autocue."
May he keep 'em peeled for evermore. RIP.

Police 5 was never a national network show. It was regional, and Shaw produced separate versions for LWT, ATV/Central, and TVS. I don't think any other regions carried the show (at least not called Police 5 and presented by him ?)
Weird. I just finished rewatching Ashes to Ashes and saw the episode with Police 5 featured in it. Looked him up and the show up as well as I'd never heard of it before (I'm only 32). This was literally yesterday

Friend of mine enjoyed his company on a train journey from Birmingham to Brockenhurst (from where he used to catch the ferry over to his home on the Isle Of Wight) a few years ago.
Being a broadcaster as well, my friend said that despite having a rather large book for reading material on the table with him - Shaw gave up the journey to recounting and discussing tales of his career, and stories from the really old days of Midlands Television.
As he got up at Brockenhurst to alight, my friend appolgised for taking up his time talking, when he should have been reading the book. "Oh don't worry. Talking to someone with an interest is much better than reading. Anyway, I've read the first couple of chapters and it's rubbish so far- I've brought it with me in the hope it gets better!"
Anyway, for our younger viewers - this was what Shaw Taylor was best known for outside of continuity for ATV

who did broadcast Police 5? Did Central broadcast it? I thought it was just Thames and TVS?

I always remember LWT doing the show for London, not Thames. And ATV did also show it, I think they started it in the 1960s when they held the London weekend, and Midlands weekday franchises.
The You Tube link provided above gives the evidence that ATV and Central showed the programme

Bob Hall and Mike Prince were interviewed on tonights ITV News Central from the Big Centre TV studios... with a lovely view of their green screen. Andy Bevan and Bob Warman also reflected on their memories of Shaw interspersed with archive videos including that above video of the final closedown of ATV in all of its Youtube glory.
Indeed this was Shaw's last ever Police 5, in the TVS region at least:
And there was life for Shaw after Police 5, here he is getting a Gotcha on Noel's House Party a year later in 1993:
Presumably Big Centre TV have cleared their schedules to pay tribute.
