I have been wondering whether Channel 4 showed Sesame Street in the same order as the United States. I was looking at listings in the British Newspaper Archive and I was able to match some of the episode details with information on Muppet Wiki. However, one or two episodes on Channel 4 in 1990 don't match the running order on Muppet Wiki, one of them seems to have been from 2 series before, going by the description, so I wasn't sure if Channel 4 might have sometimes showed random episodes from earlier seasons

Re: Sesame Street, wouldn't be at all surprising if the day's episode was picked out of a hat. Those sort of shows are designed to be aired in any old random order and you can (for the most part) mix and match a range of similar series/seasons without too much difficulty or anybody noticing. We (as a country) have never really liked it, it took a considerable effort to get it on air at all, and then when they decided to start a daytime service on ITV it was an ideal opportunity to dump it on Channel 4.

I have just read your post about Muppet Fandom, I know what you mean about how it's just another wiki page, but it's still very detailed. I was just under the impression that Channel 4 followed the American running order, although my research has shown this wasn't always the case.

You have made a good point about how the episodes can be shown in any old order. I actually enjoyed watching Sesame Street, but I know it wasn't popular with everyone in this country as you said. I can also remember Channel 4 used to cut the credits off.

Isn't Sesame Street designed to be aired in order because they have the episode number in the title sequence?

I thought the episodes just related to a letter and a number, so can pretty much air in a random order. I suspect like many daytime shows today they probably mixed repeats in with new episodes and also if some episodes were seasonal adjust their place in the series to air at the right time here, and probably dropping episodes overly referencing American events like Thanksgiving.

What the producers plan to happen and what the broadcasters decide to make happen are two entirely different things. Once something gets into syndication its largely out of anybody's control.

I think the numbers in the title sequence were just a feature they had done from the beginning, I agree with the points about syndication as well
