Series lengths

Why are they so short in the UK? (February 2007)

Shows like Doctor Who and Robin Hood are now experimenting with 13 episodes, which is a sort of halfway house for both. I like that method, because episodes can stand on their own more easily, whilst also fitting into an overall story arc. With 22 episodes, episodes can sometimes seem too similar to one another or cannot stand on their own, whereas 6 episodes don't allow for much of an arc, instead perhaps having more focus on character development.

Hang on a second they're giving Shameless a fifth series, and 16 episodes!!!

That's old news my friend. And whatever people think of the current series (which as a Shameless fan I'm really enjoying by the way) even after all the departures, it's getting the best ratings it ever has so must be doing something right.

Series 5 of 'Allo 'Allo! in 1998/9 ran for 26 episodes in an effort to attract US audiences. Also all series of The Army Game in the late 1950's ran for between 26 and 39 episodes per series. Tellingly by this stage 'Allo 'Allo! was being written by a team of writers, as was The Army Game.

Just because you enjoy it doesnt mean everyone else has to. IMO the show has lost its way and was never been all that great in the first place.

In the sixties and seventies 13 episodes for a UK drama was the norm.

Because they focus on quality rather than quantity.
