I don't think there's really any need for a Scottish 6 o'clock News as it's not meant to be regional it's meant to be international - covering stories from around the world (including Scotland, if the stories are important enough for an international news bulletin).

What I do think wouldn't be a bad idea is actually having regional news in Scotland at 6.30pm - and, indeed, in Northern Ireland and Wales. All that's currently available is 'Reporting Scotland' which is obviously a national programme. Splitting Scotland up into regions in the same way as England (e.g. BBC Scotland South, BBC Scotland Central etc) would allow for far broader, in-depth coverage of local news. This is especially important, for example, for people who have to watch Boring Border for regional news: although they try and cover Scottish stories, the maximum they ever reach in their 6pm bulletin is 3 - really quite worrying for coverage of the whole of southern Scotland!

i dont think there is a high enough population for that, although you could say some regions eg, west, southwest arent gratly populated, but then neither do they have so many opt outs as the nations.

im sure if scotland was reduced to the output of english region, then 2 or 3 regions could be created

other wise a london produced scottish 6oclock news is the next best option(using same reports as english 6oclock + some scottish reports)

...regional news in Scotland at 6.30pm....

This idea was actually thrown about a bit by BBC Scotland bosses back in 2000. I think it was quite a popular idea. From what I remember the thinking was there'd be regional opts for the areas which have opts from the national radio at the moment (D&G, Borders, Highlands and Islands and North-east) during Rep Scot. They'd be produced from the same places as do the radio bullys at the moment, Dumfries, Selkirk, Inverness and Aberdeen.

It went down quite well and was being seriously considered. I haven't heard anything more about it at the moment - but I think the idea was to launch it within about 5 years if I remember correctly. Quite cool.

BTW - nice to see someone from just up the road on the forum! (I'm from Dumfries...)

Speaking as one of the few people who it would effect I'd like to have a 'Scottish Six' not so we wouldnt have any news that only effects England and Wales but often you'll find a major story on the National Six that may be concentrated on England and Wales and at 6.30 you will hear the same thing again but with a Scottish perspective. If they had a Scottish Six they could still carry news that only effects England and Wales but perhaps ask questions like whether Scotland should do the same rather than have two conflicting stories within one hour. From another point of view I think BBC Scotland would make a great job of it.
Maybe perhaps when BBC Scotland gets its new HQ fingers crossed!

Up until about a year ago it would have been relatively easy to create a Scottish Six. The Six then was mainly links to straight VT reports, and the odd live 2 way. If the reports had been available to a second gallery (either in Glasgow or London) then a programme with some of the same content, but a different running order, could have been made quite simply.

However the Six today is far more 'produced' with fewer straight studio links to VTs, and fewer standard 2ways. It now has live intros and outros to/from packages by reporters in the field (which alter the content of the package) plus the big screen studio elements, as well as lives with graphics - either to the side or below the reporter. These elements are all editorially quite dependent on their position in the running order, and their presentation style is dictated by their position in the order in some ways.

The amount of material a Scottish Six could pinch from the current London Six is minimal - if they wanted to split they'd have to do most UK news themselves, and would need different versions of quite a lot of the foreign coverage packages fed...

I think the moment for a Scottish Six has probably passed this time - however nothing stays the same forever...
