This is assuming that independence does happen, the SNP have promised a referendum on the subject by 2008 (?). From various polls, the support for separation isn't that high is it? I maybe wrong?

According to a recent survey, support for Scottish independence was marginally higher in England than in Scotland.

Interesting. In terms of percentages?

Yes. Sorry, didn't make that clear.

That's OK, I was just curious to know roughly how many Scots support full independence; i.e the majority?

I doubt that very much!

If Channel 3 / ITV was to become completely separate from the ITV network ( rather than the ITV company ) then IMO the only advantage to this from a viewer's point of view, is that if we could have different regional news for the areas of Scotland. A bit like the opt outs on Scotland Today / North Tonight at the moment, but for the whole 22 minutes.

I thought it was my understanding that the poll numbers wer higher?

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
A Scotsman (newspaper) poll in October 2006 suggested that 51% of Scots would be in favour of independence, with 39% against[4]. A Daily Telegraph poll shows that a majority of Britons want the UK to break up

We have this topic on metropol and MP24/7 version is way more fun than this one. We have Sea-monsters, trolls, Kilts and Welsh cornish pasties to discuss over there. Mind you we haven't discussed to Scots programmes. Is take the high road still going? Will us English lot still get to see Taggart?

High Road finished up after the Queen Mum died. Some believe it was only being made for her!

I think that you're all thinking the worst here in terms of the impact any Scottish independence would have on broadcasting.

Scotland could become independent insofar as it was a sovereign, self-governing state, but may wish to retain economic links with a United Kingdom of England, Wales & NI (although that would technically just be a Kingdom of England - don't get me going on the status of Wales & NI again).

It would be similar to the economic symbiosis of the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg).

There would be no need to drastically change the existing broadcasting arrangements (apart from the money exchanged for programmes between SBC and "EBC"* (not BBC anymore!) . No doubt the transmitter network could remain intact.

* Harks back to Emu Broadcasting Company - but that's another thread! Laughing

It would probably mean the end of the ITV Border region I should think too?

Taggart is sold all over the world; so I imagine Wales, NI and England will still get to see it... they will be muhdurrr otherwise Wink

I don't see why the BBC would necessarily have to cease if the Union broke-up - there would continue to be the maximum co-operation, cultural exchange and people have so much in common with each other (as well as diversity) that instiutions like the BBC could well exist post independence for any and all of the constituent parts of the UK.

The four (or five) parts of the UK/British Isles and the peoples of the two main islands have been entwined for hundreds of years, are enriched by each other and will always be thus - 'independence' would hardly change that.
