During the late edition of Scotland Today Shereen Nangiani seemed to be operating a small grey box which was on her right side .I don't think it was the compass used to operate autocue it may have been some sort of mic as she was touching it when handing back to Mark Austin at ITN it did look a bit unprofessional as it was in sight Scotland Today don't have a desk now they sit on a bench similar to Five News .

I have never seen this before on STV.

I would not think this was an autocue control - that is unless SMG are costcutting again ( they will have the presenters starting the tapes with a remote control next).

Several ITV regions' newsreaders operate their own autocue for the late night and GMTV bulletins. It's not unusual. However, it's usually completely hidden on the floor behind the desk.

Well there are a few ways of self oping the autocue the foot pedal the compass (which is what i think that it is ) or having a camera above the presenter and looking down on the script projecting it onto the camera .

It just looks very odd saying that i remember on the late night bulletin closing shot on Five you could see the whole foot pedal and cable running through the studio to the presenter .which was realy naff that was before the last relaunch .
