I think what's great about this new brand it still tells you the genre, but it uniquely identfies the TV channel like the word 'Sci Fi' couldn't.

That is part of the point of the name change: they can't trademark 'sci-fi' but they can 'SyFy'

Personally I'm used to it already, being a wrestling fan and having [the now retired] ECW mentioned to be broadcast on SyFy in the States for the last few months. Not only is it more modern and brand worthy, it doesn't have to be science fiction completely, and can branch off into other terratories as the US channel does.

That's happening to a lot of US cable channels, they're all showing more general programming away from their original theme sometimes with a name change to match
Court TV became TruTV and has moved from court cases to flay on the wall actuality
Biography became Bio and as seen in the UK it's moved away from biographies
History is in negotiations to show Top Gear in the US
and of course MTV dropped the music long ago and has now dropped the 'Music Television' from its logo

I think it's clever yet simple...I like it.

I think it's stupid. What's wrong with SFTV or SFN?

Sorry, have you mixed up the words worse and highly effected?

I think you have mixed up the rebrand rdd was referring to. I'm certain he was citing the UKG2 to UKTVG2 rebrand rather than the subsequent change to Dave.

Correct and right. UKTVG2 was possibly the worst name any channel I know has ever had. At six syllables It was a nightmare for announcers to spell out (hence the "its for watching, not for saying")

Though I'm no big fan of the name "Dave" itself (I think its rather silly), from a marketing point of view I'd be first to admit its worked well (though some of the other UKTV rebrands, like UKTV Gold to G.O.L.D., haven't been so good).

Nothing apart from the fact that they're both rubbish names! Laughing

Dave's a great name for the channel and it did work really well. However it's the sort of marketing trick that can only be a success once.
The other UKTV names and formats are fine but they haven't made as much impact

Something weird is going on.

Virgin Media's EPG has already updated to read "Syfy" but the DOG still says Sci-Fi with the planet logo.

Jumping the gun?

PS .. I wasn't joking, although I would have preferred SF (a la FX or Q) than Syfy which just sounds to me like a 2-year old doing phonics.

They both remind me of Setanta, and therefore sound like Sports News channel names to me.
