The US version of the 'Sci Fi Channel' is to rebrand to 'SyFy' from 7 July 2009. The rest of their international channels will begin to change from Q3 of this year.

I quite like the logo and tagline:

I have to admit my first reaction was "why?", but there are sensible reasons beyond the marketing speak:

Quote:
"We are very excited to be part of the evolution of the Syfy Channel," said Roma Khanna, president of global networks and initiatives at NBC Universal. "This will establish a consistent global brand that is synonymous with world-class, imaginative content and represents unlimited mainstream content and platform growth potential for our business."

'Sci-Fi' can't be trademarked, whereas 'SyFy' can, so I suppose it helps them develop a stronger brand which is linked to the channel instead of the genre.

I'm not sure how long the current branding has been in place, but I'm sure it's been quite a few years.

Why?

It's far more unique than Sci-Fi, and looks better too!

^ Or maybe they can now use the excuse to add none-Sci Fi genred programming.

Not really, the name SyFy still gives you a pretty good idea on what you can expect from the channel.

I think thats what "unlimited mainstream content" means in the quote above.

Me thinks NBC have seen how it's worked for UKtv and decided to jump on the odd-name bandwagon to improve ratings Laughing

Difference being that (to the ear, at least), it's still the same name.

Indeed. The name is phonetically the same on air, that's the whole point.

I'd have said "Sigh-Figh"

If you owned a tv channel, would you really want "sigh" in the name?

I wouldn't. It immediately conveys boredom.
