Absolutely spot on Square Eyes.

I think its incredibly sad that those people mentioned...Jimmy Tarbuck, Paul Daniels, Jeremy Beadle etc have now either retired or can't get proper TV work anymore.

Now don't get me wrong, the likes of Vernon Kay are great people but, as you say, they have just been plucked from the kids TV presenting strand. With Vernon he goes on the "pretence" of trying to be like Brucie or Barrymore etc but it really doesn't work....take the Family Fortunes titles for example.

So tonight we've had shows by....
Ant and Dec - ex-SM:TV Live
Holly Willoughby - MoM (CiTV etc)
Vernon Kay - ex T4
Philip Schofield - ex Going Live/CBBC *Although he's an exception because he's developed his talent over the years and is a fully trained broadcaster.

Harry Hill and Al Murray have been the only real comedians on TV tonight. Even though Al Murray's Pub Landlord is a poor character imo.

But its those people that appeal to the audience. Dancing on Ice is a family program, so why not take a presenter that everyone well knows, and was a kids presenter when the 25-35 age group were kids, and is now a presenter aimed at much older people too, and take one from CiTV, so that kids don't feel left out.

As time moves on, a target audience ages. The kids that Vernon Kay used to present for are all probably about 20-25 now. I know he has only just left T4 but when he was mainly on there, it was a good few years ago.

Its natural that TV presenters progress with their audience, not stay in the same place. Cat Deeley is a good example of this.

Surely this has always happened?

Hence Noel Edmonds, Ant and Dec, Cat Deeley, Chris Tarrent...the list is endless.

It IS the natural progression of tv!

No, there has been some element of this in the past, but it was the exception not the norm. The majority of presenters in the 70's / 80's where famous for being entertainers in their own right and had an act.

The only one I can think of who is probably an exception today is Graham Norton, comedian turned presenter, and Brucie is still around of course.

ITV is full of kids TV graduates.

The only ones I can think of are...
BBC1, ITV1/2/Play, SKY1/2/3 and all the children's channels. Most of the other channels actually use presenters from all genres of braodcasting and are not reliant on presenters than have come through the ranks of children's television.

Thats what I meant, the mainstream channels. The odd sky channel uses them also.

So BBC out-do ITV for the battle of viewers with 6 out of 10 programmes being shown on BBC1. Another win for BBC, although ITV's output is quite decent - just wrongly scheduled IMHO. For Instance Pokerface would be a good Sunday evenning show preferbly shown between 630pm and 730pm (i.e. drop the Sunday soaps!!!!)

Nice to see Dancing on Ice doing well. Pokerface isnt doing so well this time then.

I agree, axe the Sunday soaps and put a quiz show on (not necessarily Pokerface!)

These are the confirmed schedules for 10th February.

BBC1
5.55 When Will I Be Famous?
7.15 Shrek
8.35 Casualty
9.25 National Lottery - 1 vs 100

ITV1
5.55 Harry Hill's TV Burp
6.25 Dancing on Ice
7.45 Primeval
8.45 PokerFace
9.45 Dancing on Ice - The Skate Off
10.15 Al Murray's Happy Hour

So BBC1 are trying to spoil Primeval with Shrek. Not sure if it will work - Shrek has got fantastic ratings on it's previous 2 outings but everyone's seen it so i dont think it will stop those who want to watch Primeval from watching it. However it might capture a lot of people who aren't that bothered about Primeval but would of watched it if there was nothing else on. Interesting to see BBC1 being very competitve with their scheduling, they seem to be getting more like this on Saturday nights.
