It seems to be Saturday Night Takeaway is about to head down the path Noel's House Party did, but in a different form. With House Party, they constantly rejigged routines, formats, rebuilt the set over and over again, and transformed the look of the House Party from what it looked in 1991/1992 to something completely different by 1998/1999.

Saturday Night Takeaway took a four year break for similar reasons in the past. Perhaps it should do the same again.

Problem is, they already have taken a break of 2019 off and returned with this lack lustre series in 2020, even with a year off.

You make it sound like a holiday. One of them was in rehab.

At the risk of doing a BM11 (R.I.P.) surely the Place on the Plane prize is looking less appealing with every passing week at the moment.

Luckily Walt Disney World seems pretty much unaffected at the moment.

Let’s not forget amongst all this talk of the show going downhill - it’s still getting the ratings.

I thought the ‘cringe’ section was pretty weak and I’d not do it again. I think some of the other criticism is a tad over the top though. It’s quite funny how one minute we were told it had returned identical to the last series, and then next the same person is complaining that some items have been dropped.

I still dislike when they launch straight into a musical act at the start, is probably do it somewhere in the middle, although has SNT ever really had a straight musical performance?

I think they used to do straight musical performances in the original run, but haven’t done any since the 2013 revival.

I also think some of the criticism is over-baked here and comes from a mix of over-analysis of what is the lightest of light entertainment, and rose tinted glasses.

Cringe wasn’t the best thing they’ve ever done by a long way but they’ve always done different opening features and some work better than others. It was a bit different and I don’t think it was much worse than Singalong Live. Men in Brown isn’t really working for me either but I’d hardly dismiss it as “filler”, quite a lot of effort has clearly gone into it. Ant vs Dec has always had a mix of challenges, it was never big stuff like abseiling every series.

I thought Get Out of Me Ear and the End of The Show Show were both very good this week and the best of each they’ve done so far this series.

Most people just sit back and let it wash over them and have a laugh. If it isn’t doing it for people then fair enough but I’d suggest that you’ll never enjoy it if you’re sat there over-analysing it all and timing the length of every feature.

Precisely this.

That's the worrying thing. They've got no incentive to keep improving unless the BBC magically find something to compete with.
