I still can't help but compare to this to Michael Barrymore's scandal. Yes, a body was found on his property, though he has never been found guilty of directly causing his death. AIUI, ITV washed his hands of him completely because his drug habits conflicted with his family friendly image, and he was pretty much ITV's pride and joy back then. They even turned their back on Matthew Kelly in light of sex abuse allegations that he was ultimately cleared of.

Everyone turned their backs on Barrymore because he was a complete monster to work with who was already on thin ice by the time the pool incident happened. Maybe if he hadn't burnt all his bridges he'd have found a way back?. You go on to mention Matthew Kelly but he has continued to have a successful career! He's spoken of recording gameshow pilots he just hasn't particularly enjoyed doing them and instead prefers to do theatre now. The industry is quite fickle and will tolerate dicks until the point of no return. Then they'll forgive almost anything but being a dick.

ITV did actually commission another series of My Kind of Music after the event, and was only cancelled after that due to poor ratings, so to be fair to ITV, they did give him another chance.

I believe he was still contracted to do that final series of My Kind of Music as part of an earlier deal.

I think maybe the ITV Continuity Announcer should say what happened.

Already the world and his wife know what happened, by the 31st I should think the news will have reached other planets ! There's no need to say anything, is there ?

I was just joking but DS took me seriously.

No they didn't. Quite the reverse. Granada released the following statement:

Quote:
"Granada and ITV fully support Matthew Kelly during this difficult time.

"He has emphatically denied the allegation made against him and no charge has been brought.

"The Stars in their Eyes Celebrity Specials due in the studio this coming week will go ahead, but in the circumstances Davina McCall will act as guest presenter on Matthew's behalf.

"Matthew is grateful to her for agreeing to appear at such short notice."

Mr Kelly said: "I've huge respect for Davina and know she will do a terrific job caretaking the show."

He sensibly stepped down from Stars in Their Eyes while the investigation was ongoing and Davina McCall covered him for three specials at the start of 2003 (during which she expressed support and made a point of saying she was sure he'd be back in his rightful place soon). When he was cleared, Matthew recorded the remaining three specials in 2003 and hosted the 2004 series before leaving to focus on his acting career. This move was again supported by ITV which commissioned Granada's Cold Blood in which he starred as a serial killer.

My opinion has always been that Barrymore had less of a chance of career survival as its been well documented that he was difficult to work with.

I stand corrected. At the time I was under the impression they dropped him, and he refused to work with him again when he was acquitted and ITV tried to offer his job back.

This may be a stupid question, but now that Ant has been actually charged for drink driving does that prevent ITV from featuring him, for example in recorded pieces during the next couple of Takeaway episodes? BGT presumably will be fine audition wise as that is after the hearing date.

No.

And although there is a case to be heard it will be a magistrates court and with drink driving the evidence is very factual - there isn't much to influence other than defining the character of the culprit.

No, there was a lot of support from ITV and the industry in general. I remember being at a recording of Outtake TV that week and Paul O'Grady went into a rant about how ridiculous the whole thing was. It says a lot that ITV went out of their way to publicly support him. I think the promo for the first Davina fronted special even referenced Matthew.

Davina references him here at the start of the second special of 2003

With the decision made at this early stage to air the last two shows, this should give them some time to record anything extra they need to make up the time used by any dropped slots. They have got 3 episodes content to go into 2 now, so that will help.

I am guessing Saturday Knight Takeaway will be held back until later in the year and aired as a special as they did at Christmas and the only bits to be dropped are any Undercover/Get Out Of My Ears left. Everything else is fine with Dec only and they could even do a Dec Vs ... if they wanted to.

I assume Dec will come on from the stage rather than down the stairs, as per the guests. They can't make it too jokey, but could do something with Dec rushing back stage to get ready and then appear on stage.

I doubt they'll edit Ant out.

I expect it’ll be the opposite

It’ll Ant vs Dec that is dropped as that obviously involves Ant actually being there.

Saturday Knight Takeaway will probably still continue, as will all the other bits
