There's sympathy for him but the same audience wouldn't have the same sympathy for any of the random no names who put kids in hospital like that this week. It would be more a case of pitchforks and torches than cheers and best wishes.
This is exactly the issue. He's in rehab because he was (suspected) of drink driving and crashing into a car with a child inside. A lot of people have turned on him because of that, regardless whether or not they're considering his mental wellbeing, and it makes for a situation where there isn't really a right answer. Well wishes from presenters are going to clash with some viewers arguing "what about the little girl?" Even pulling the show completely is going to cause problems.
I still can't help but compare to this to Michael Barrymore's scandal. Yes, a body was found on his property, though he has never been found guilty of directly causing his death. AIUI, ITV washed his hands of him completely because his drug habits conflicted with his family friendly image, and he was pretty much ITV's pride and joy back then. They even turned their back on Matthew Kelly in light of sex abuse allegations that he was ultimately cleared of. I have to wonder whether the lack of a snap decision over Ant is a knock-on effect of ITV's over-reliance on Ant & Dec, or whether they're afraid of breaking apart their happy ITV family that they're so keen on pushing.
