As others have said, the end credits were a nice change from the black background.

Are ITV's credit guidelines available online at all?

Here's an updated version from last September: http://www.itv.com/documents/pdf/End%20Credit%20Rules%20Sep%2016%20as%20pdf.pdf

Edit : Here's a treasure trove of information on all the production guidelines.

It really kills the end of some shows by having them cut to a black screen for the credits, as I've said on here before. Broadchurch gets away with it (and it looks MUCH better) - they even included vocals on their credits last night, breaking another rule according to the guidelines! I seem to remember the final Dancing on Ice just used a wide jib shot of the studio behind the credits which, again, looked fine.

I think big entertainment shows which often end with a singer/performance at the end should be allowed credits overlayed on the performance to allow the show to end smoother rather than half way through the final performance we just cut to black which just seems so off.
Same with special shows like award shows which just feel out of place with the standard credits.
I guess most of the time it's either just easier to stick to black and white credits to keep things simple and quick, or the team you have to put your request into are stingy and rarely approve different credits.

Even the blue gradients they had in place around the early-mid 00s would be far better than stone cold black. Do they think it looks classy or something?

I suppose it's to look clean in the ECP as a wild background would look a bit too busy and may clash with the ECP.

From a production point of view, like we keep seeing elsewhere 'presentation' seems to be a means to an end these days, and why pay someone to design a background when you can just use black.

Black looks better than the blue stripes they had, but the original blue background before that was better, plus were they not allowed different colours back then?

The background changed from the 2006 corporate ITV blue stripes to black as it was felt that would clash less with the ECP design, which at that moment was also changed to the yellow swirls/sparkles on a black background. But it was never updated when they went to the current squeeze. I suspect the feeling is that the text is more readable on a black background when shrunk, but it doesn't have feel like someone's died when there is no squeeze.

I don't really know why ITV persist with a generic credits style, when no other channel in this country does.

They sort of do, though it doesn't consist of much more than alignment.

They do, but often times I've seen it's been created by the network, rather than the programme's producers.

I don't really think of them as generic credits, seing as they have their own backgrounds and are in the show's own style, as opposed to the black background, static text and generic font of ITV.
