This is an odd question but the appearance yesterday had a different appearance yesterday than normal including the VT play outs. Would this have something to do with PAL to NTSC conversion or would that not affect things these days?

Not PAL and NTSC as such as they're obsolete analogue formats. However they will have been using local equipment which would all work at 60 or 30 frames a second which would have been converted to the 25fps used in the UK

Realistically, would it be a feasible job to tell the truck to run at 25fps? I know some of the Telegenic / Sky trucks can switch over to 30fps if needed (though the fact it's fed via satellite might make this more complicated, unless it went IP?)

Surely it's all about frame rates than actual 'standards' - so if a truck could go from 30p to 60i, it could be told to do 25p / 50i.

I'm not sure how easy it is as it wouldn't just be a truck that needs switching. I'd imagine that there's more often a need for a UK based OB to need to do a job in 60 than a US one to work in 50 so it might not be as easy.

Wouldn't there be bigger issues like lighting flicker which would make working in the local format more acceptable?

The actual uplink or whatever back to the UK would be less of an issue I'd have thought.

That is true.. but at least for things like acquisition and single camera shoots, things can be tweaked via an option in a camera menu than having to hire local kit. Then again the messing about with customs and carnets, not to mention security, it probably is easier to hire .

Not really any complication with satellite - just a case of setting the MPEG encoder to run 25i instead of 29.97i.

I think last night's show was a 29.97 production though, but I'd imagine ITV have an Alchemist or two, so it's not an issue. (Other standards converters are available, but they're not as good.)

That's what I heard on twitter that it was 29.97.

"No delay" is rather overstating things. It was worse than usual.

The blur of the 60-to-50 conversion was evident throughout - even on the "Crown Jewels" skit, which is normally 25p, it looked like it had been interpolated all the way up to 60i before being converted back down - it had that almost-but-not-quite-video look you get on interpolated stuff (e.g. so-called "60fps!" trailers on YouTube).

Maybe they had to convert it to 59.94 and back again?

I thought it was a very poor standards conversion, modern kit is capable of much better than what I saw.

It seriously lacked any detail, it looked like a slightly better SD broadcast.

I had the misfortune of having to watch in SD in the first place, so couldn't tell!

As others have said, the end credits were a nice change from the black background.

Are ITV's credit guidelines available online at all?
