I don't watch a great deal of ITV1, but during the last 12 months I've never watched for more than an hour without seeing something shoddy in terms of presentation from LNN.

Continuity for Portgordon comes from ScottishTV and they do it well. Network ITV1, at best, forgettable.

Not sure if you personally still venture over to 'Cardiff' on your Sky button, but unless Trish or Glen are around to remind me of days of old, I actually still prefer ITV1 Wales to Network. For those who don't know, there are only two announcers, they are recorded, and the same announcer runs the whole 16 hour day. LNN still sometimes cut them off or forget to play the right anno, and yet still I'd rather listen to them.

Leighton randomly breathes all over the place and Sue whispers [pardon?], but I really don't like *urgency* in continuity -- Wales still get that on the ECPs and the 'Next' slides, mind.

ITV1 Wales continuity may have a certain 'yesterday' quality to it, and it can't make any allowances for a change in length of junction [either gets cut off or loooooong space of silence], but it's the calmer alternative.

The only thing about SMG is the little click all the time before s/he speaks, I've no idea what it is.

[quote="Steve Hyden"]My biggest problem is that Paul speaks too fast (and he admits it!) .... Mind you I can talk or maybe that should be I can't talk after my show yesterday eek![quote]

But you must remember Steve, you work on a local radio station and he is a voice on national TV - he perhaps shouldn't be making that mistake!!!

I'm stuck on this one though. I watched all of ITV1 on Saturday (except Millionaire - I hate that programme) and I thought he was really energetic, and was enjoying what he was doing.. but there was that one occassion when I couldn't understand him.

That is the only negative point about him, he has a tendancy once every couple of shifts to talk too fast - but he doesn't do it as much as he did at the start. His overall scripting is good though, and sometimes quite funny. Did you hear him talking about 'Sparkling Cynide', "It was the professor with a kettle in the library... or was it"- I thought that was funny.

With the greatest of respect to "Scottish Paul" reading the programme name in a smiley, up beat voice will win him no prizes for the creative lead sell.

Is he the best or the worst? Doesn't really matter. Rather like being the best Luftwaffe pilot in 1944, by then the world could see that the war was being lost.

Should that not - it comes from SMG in Glasgow - and I dont know how you can say they do it well? Portgordon is served by Grampian TV and how many times in prime time or any other time come to that do you here the SMG announcer mention the name Grampian TV?? Even the recorded trails dont mention the name or even show the name now on screen!!

The once fantastic continunity team in Grampian are now gone and that is a BAD thing for us all (who remember them - that is)??

I am obliged to you for your input, background information and perspective, all valued.

Perhaps I should put my comments in context.

In the grand scheme of things, like the majority of the population, whilst I have a view I don't actually care.

I have to say that 'Scottish Paul' is my least favourate CA on ITV1 at the mo. The women from BBC ONE is growing on me. Graham whats his name is nice too.

Yes, not bad. Still not to keen on him. He should Just stick to the "over on ITV2 Bla bla bla but here its bla bla bla bla bla in tonight’s Emmerdale” announcements.

If only Maggie Mash was here...........but anyway, enough of the dreaming!

The woman from Scottish TV is good. She would be nice on Network. ITV1 wales are a good gang too. We should have a welsh man on the network or even an asian voice. That could provide interesting results. Diversity is everything right?

I've been watching a bit of ITV1 tonight and have a question for the rest of you.

"Scottish Paul", as you lot tend to call him, is on tonight.

Am I getting the wrong impression, or is he trying far TOO hard to emulate the best of the old LWT days with his enthusiasm and simply getting it TOTALLY WRONG?

As far as I'm concerned, he's going right over the top with his "so-called" enthusiasm and making the whole evening sound absolutely dreadful.

It's almost as if he's taking the urine out of the programmes, he's SO over the top.

REAL enthusiasm for REAL programmes is excellent; but this anagram of carp, tonight, is something else.

What do others think, as I'm beginning to worry about my sanity?

Totally agree Nick. By sounding too excited, he's actually tripping over his words, not good for a network continuity announcer. Sure, he's trying to BIG IT UP, but for me, it's just not working.
A good announcer should be able to tailor his/her work, depending on the type of programme they link in to. One thing the current crop of announcers lack (with the exception of Glen, Trish & Paul S) is GRAVITAS.
Even on linking into Tonight with Trevor or the ITV (ITN) news which invariably starts with some tragic opening line, it sounds to me as if the announcer is just about to crack some wise joke!

Some come on ITV1, what are you playing at, the honeymoon period is surely up, isn't it about time you sorted the MEN from the BOYS.

Can you believe it's almost a year since we lost our beloved regional ITV to the mess that LNN are now supplying.

yes thats right - trying to pick announcers based on their talent has fallen on it's big fat arse - so LNN ought to now fill all the posts with a person from each ethnicity Rolling Eyes nothing against asian v/os (i mean there is a nice asian lady on bbc 2 - but i'd like to think she is employed for her talent than through some patronising initiative.)

goodness me, next you'll be insisting on the employment of deaf announcers. there is a cruel joke in there somewhere, but as marjory always says - *thats not for here*

I still think that Network could change the current line up for other announcers. Like I say, The ITV1 Wales team are nice, and her from Scottish TV.

As for the Asian lady on BBC Two, well I agree, she is very very good, and is one of my faves on the channel. I agree with the fact that the BBC would have employed her because she is very good at what she does.

It’s a shame that no one from the northern Team was employed. Maybe one could have stayed at GMG north just to record Regional announcements. Save a Job for LNN to mess about with and let them get on with something else. But I suppose it’s far more cost-effective for them to be done at LNN.

A good analogy, but an even better one would relate to a kamikaze pilot, or perhaps one of the kamikaze human torpedoes, in 1945.

Then why even bother reading a thread concerning continuity?

And that is all that matters in the eyes of the management and stockholders.
