I've been watching a bit of ITV1 tonight and have a question for the rest of you.
"Scottish Paul", as you lot tend to call him, is on tonight.
Am I getting the wrong impression, or is he trying far TOO hard to emulate the best of the old LWT days with his enthusiasm and simply getting it TOTALLY WRONG?
As far as I'm concerned, he's going right over the top with his "so-called" enthusiasm and making the whole evening sound absolutely dreadful.
It's almost as if he's taking the urine out of the programmes, he's SO over the top.
REAL enthusiasm for REAL programmes is excellent; but this anagram of carp, tonight, is something else.
What do others think, as I'm beginning to worry about my sanity?
I'd be a fab announcer, although I would be extremely tempted to say something like:
"Hi guys and girls, this is ITV1, and in a moment we join the studios of ITN for the news, but first, if there are any cute blonde girlies between 17-24 with a nice arse, then heres my mobile number 078*********"
I was tempted to go bang my head several times on a hard brick wall when he said "BRAND NEW NEVER SEEN BEFORE...Denis Nordens Laughter File is next!"
It was the "9th edition" for gods sake!
But that's exactly what it was, Brand New, Never seen before Dennis Nordens Laughter file. It might have been the 9th edition, but it's still brand new and never been seen before.
With the greatest of respect to "Scottish Paul" reading the programme name in a smiley, up beat voice will win him no prizes for the creative lead sell.
Is he the best or the worst? Doesn't really matter. Rather like being the best Luftwaffe pilot in 1944, by then the world could see that the war was being lost.
I don't watch a great deal of ITV1, but during the last 12 months I've never watched for more than an hour without seeing something shoddy in terms of presentation from LNN.
Continuity for Portgordon comes from ScottishTV and they do it well. Network ITV1, at best, forgettable.
I am split on this one (oooer) - in many ways I agree with Nick but on the other hand Paul is at least trying to be different from the 'sameness' of ITV1 continuity.
My biggest problem is that Paul speaks too fast (and he admits it!) - a prime example of this was the link early on Sat evening where he tripped over several words and made a complete hash of the announcment - then he again he did the pi** out of himself for doing it. Mind you I can talk or maybe that should be I can't talk after my show yesterday eek!
Back to the plot... both Paul and Sasha are attempting to be different and inject some enthusiasm so good on 'em for that.
In my opinion, for what it's worth, Graham Rogers and Paul Seed are good at what they do but are 'safe' in there announcements - Sonia is just dull and shock horror I don't rate Graham Bannerman at all since his Carlton and BSB Galaxy Days
My only other gripe still about ITV1 continuity are the 'next, then, later' bits - I wish they would do them live - they are just very dull at present.
