Saturday morning TV memories

What was a typical Saturday morning for you? (June 2019)

I really did not like Ministry of Mayhem at the time. I know SMTV was nowhere near as good by the end, and the last few months were old clips from the Ant, Dec & Cat days just to hammer the point home, but I still stayed faithful to the bitter end. MoM was just the complete opposite approach, the kind of kids TV that grown ups think you want to watch. For me it was just a massive turn off and I didn't even make it through the first show.

I liked Dick & Dom in da Bungalow but I never really became a regular viewer or huge fan. It's weird because looking back I did find it funny and I have memories of individual sketches, but for some reason I never got into it properly.

I don't think this has been mentioned in this thread, but always worth a watch - Episode 2 of CITV's "WOW!"

Forced into the car park by a power cut, Sim Courtie makes it up as he goes along.

SM:TV was my proper foray into Saturday morning TV. I watched it every week and had pretty much all of the merchandise released! I was sad when it finished, but really enjoyed Ministry of Mayhem when that started and think it did well to to mix some of what SM:TV was with a show like Tiswas. I feel like it's what Saturday Mash-Up is similar too now.

Here's a great sketch from SM:TV

Was rubbish after Ant and Dec left, I think that was around the time I switched to the bungalow.

WoW did a good job, and seemed to be on its way to becoming a success... if it hadn't been axed after 4 months to pay for ITV buying the rights to F1. So you had the next 2 years consisting of extremely cheap to make shows (in broomcupboard studios, or with CGI dragons) like Scratchy & Co, Tricky and Mashed until SM:TV came along.

Oh, and nobody's mentioned Telegantic Megavision yet... but that's probably for the best.

There was TX, a very short-lived 1980s Granada-made show which might have been Tony Slattery's big break. Unfortunately nothing seems to have survived of its (Central-made) game show segment, Knock Your Block Off, at least on YouTube...

For an ITV 90’s effort WOW was ok, and certainly should have been given a second run. Apparently LWT wanted Scratchy and Co instead as it cost a fraction to produce, that and the cost of F1 saw an early demise for WOW.

Yes, as Sim says on the Broom Cupboard website, they were blown off the screen by Live and Kicking when that returned, but as the autumn went on, Wow's figures went up and they honestly thought they could beat Live and Kicking - but they'd already decided to axe it for being too expensive.

Such a great episode, though. I love it when Sim suggests the viewers should all call their mates because it's going to be a shambles. There's a great bit when he welcomes everyone who's just switched over from the Beeb because the cricket has just started. Love that kind of thing.

Alas, I’m from the Trevor McDoughnut era. Which probably makes me the oldest person on this forum.

Like a fine wine, some may say.....

And how about Number 73 and the sandwich quiz? I always watched that for Sandi Toksvig’s rapid-rate intro. Alas, no clips on YouTube that I can find.

It's the daring, dazzling, death defyingly dull, devastatingly dangerous, delectable, delicatessen-able, divinely decadent Sandwich Quiz!"

There's loads of them on YouTube, here's a compilation of intros from series 5. Interesting to see the range of guests on there

And here's an episode with 3 ethels... two looking a bit like Les Dennis and Dustin Gee Confused

YouTube account TheMeakers has a lot of No73 clips
