Refreshed titles on Saturday Kitchen Live following James Martin's departure last week. Michel Roux Jr looking very nervous hosting this week; he stumbled at the start and referred to "tonight's show" (something corrected by a sharp subtitler who typed "TODAY'S show" in capital letters).

Saturday Kitchen is nothing without James Martin, alas.

James Martin wasn't exactly immune to fluffs though, he used to struggle over the phone number most weeks. Roux is doing a job on par with Martin.

Agree with Andrew, I think Roux Jr was on a par with James Martin. I remember people saying it wouldn't be the same without Anthony Warrell Thompson when he left and James Martin went on to be a brilliant host for 10 years only leaving on his own accord.

Speaking of James Martin fluffs here is the best

Michel Roux Jr wasn't great. However, to be fair to him, I don't expect any of the guest hosts announced to be any good other than Matt Tebbutt, who I thought of instantly when they announced James was leaving.

It a tough job and there aren't many chefs out there that can cope with keeping the show steady throughout. It is a lot different to being a guest chef. Hopefully, they'll give the job to him or Ainsley Harriott.

I'd love to see Ainsley host SK, but while he's got branded food on supermarket shelves with his name on, I doubt he'll be allowed to host a BBC show. Wasn't Lloyd Grossman told he couldn't present shows due to his cook-in sauces?

James Martin has had plenty of branded cookware throughout his tenure on Saturday Kitchen, and the same was true of Antony Worrall Thompson (as any bid tv viewer would know). Perhaps sauce crosses a line, though the Loyd Grossman sauces were heavily advertised on TV.

Watching on iPlayer HD, is it just me or did the picture seem a bit 'weird'? Not quite the filmic effect but it didn't feel normal for some reason.

Michel did a good job considering the circumstances but you could tell he was basically just reading off an autocue most of the time, obviously James would do the same but it wouldn't be as obvious having hosted it for so long as he would have a rough idea with the structure of the show and could improvise at times, even if that did mean with delicious looking things Wink

To be honest overall I don't like the idea of 'guest presenters' too much and would rather the BBC have just rested it for a couple of months, tweaked the format and found a suitable permanent replacement as it still feels too much like Jame's show, and there is going to be too much of a swing in quality between the hosting over the next few weeks I fear. Bargain Hunt is in the exact same position at the moment, some of the 'experts' hosting are clear candidates for a permanent role whilst others are a bit hopeless but they all copy pretty much the exact same script as Tim did and it feels strange.

It is all Angus Deaytons fault. I agree - it's just lazy really to basically audition on air. Breakfast had the right idea of selecting a probable candidate and trialling them on air as cover for the outgoing host rather than waiting until they go and then trialling numerous people out.

They introduced 720p50 streams a little while ago, so if it's been a while since you last used iPlayer that might have been unexpected. On a laptop/computer screen (running at 60p) it still stutters a bit, slightly ruining the "video" smoothness if you're sensitive to it.

I don't know why it would be "lazy" to use guest presenters, given you then need one every week and have to give them a crash course in how it all works and train them up and so on. The reason they do this is presumably so somebody doesn't immediately take over from James Martin and mess it up and appear rubbish in comparison, whereas now they can try people out and see who does and doesn't work without having to commit. Then when they've found a good one they can presumably do a revamp then. Like they did with Simon Amstell on Buzzcocks, that worked very well.

Yeah, its more effort rather than 'lazy'. They don't want to end up with someone awful like the bloke who filled in for him a few months ago.
