According to TV Ark, Screensport started in 1984, by WH Smith. It seems likely that the use of 'Sports Channel' here is a purely descriptive, generic name as AIUI, The Sports Channel was the BSB one founded in 1990 that morphed into Sky Sports in 1991.
Sports Channel – became Screensports and then European Sports Network and then merged with Eurosport – so basically still on-air

Interesting. Where is this from? Does the source mention CNN International (or CNN Europe as it was then known)?

When the Sci Fi Channel started in 1995 it shared the same slots Sky soaps, travel and the history channel.
What I would like to know did Sci Fi Channel broadcast on the weekends? or was the slots used for Sky sports 2.

On satellite, it seems the Sci Fi Channel was given spare slots in its early days. For Sky subscribers, it was seen on the infamous transponder 47. I don't know how it was broadcast in its first year, but an old chart from late 1996 says the Sci Fi Channel was on between 1 and 4 am every day of the week. Only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays could it be watched in prime time, when it started at 8 pm.
Sky Sports 2 took over all of tp 47 in 1997 and the other channels were moved which allowed Sci Fi Channel to broadcast from 8 pm every day of the week. Its hours were shortened to 8 pm-12 am in 1998 and would remain that way until Sky Analogue was closed down in 2001.
There was also a 24 hour version, but it was only available on cable.

That's correct, at one stage, the Sports Channel, Screensport, and Eurosport were all on air at the same time. In April 1991 the Sports Channel was rebranded Sky Sports and launched on Astra, at that stage Sky withdrew as an investor in Eurosport which nearly killed it, fortuanately Sky were able to offload their stake to TF1 which kept it going. It took over Screensport in 1993 and basically closed it down, on cable in Dublin we were left with no basic sport channel until 1995 when Eurosport was added.
Now Screensport's branding after 1987 or so was a bit of an oddity, I've never seen the likes of it before or since. Effectively it had a different name depending on what country you were in, despite the fact that like Eurosport (at the time), the pictures were the same, only the soundtrack was different! It was Screensport in English, TV Sport in French, Sportkanal in German, and Sportnet in Dutch! All four names appeared on screen in the ident! Confusing matters further, the announcement for English viewers was "This is Screensport, part of the European Sports Network!". The "European Sports Network" thing was something announcers mentioned but did not appear on screen. I presume viewers in other langauges got something similar. Watch the ident....

"The European Sports Network" had a complicated ownership structure where TV Sport, Sportkanal and Sportnet were affiliates of TESN with different ownership structures. WH Smith and ESPN owned TESN, which also owned Screensport, while the European affiliates had different owners (although WHSTV held shares in all of them).
