That was not meant for Direct to home, it was for cable systems to receive and required much larger dishes than Astra 1 needed.

Bingo:

Same details about the Sat that went up, it also have phones ets.
Quote:
The Orbital Test Satellite programme was an experimental satellite system inherited by the ESA in 1975 from its predecessor, the European Space Research Organization (ESRO).

The first of the pair of OTS satellites (OTS-1) was lost at launch in September 1977. OTS-2 became one the first geostationary communications satellites to carry six Ku-band transponders and was capable of handling 7,200 telephone circuits. With a mass of approximately 445 kg on station, the OTS 2 bus was hexagonal with overall dimensions of 2.4 m by 2.1 m. Two solar panels with a span of 9.3 m provided 0.6 kW of electrical power. British Aerospace was the prime contractor from the European MESH consortium which developed the OTS vehicle. It completed its primary mission in 1984 after which the spacecraft was involved in a 6-year program of experiments, including the testing of a new attitude control technique taking advantage of solar wind forces. In January 1991, OTS 2 was moved out of the geostationary ring and into a graveyard orbit.

Ah right. Still cable systems in the UK could have transmitted the channels.

Your point being 623058?

Many cable systems in place did take Sky Channel.

My point being this.

A satellite like the one being described or one very similar could have had space rented by the group and transmitted to the UK that way.

EDIT:Whoops, sorry remlap. I thought you were speaking to me Embarassed

Confused. sorry.

Either way there was plenty of space for any who wanted to use it for a TV channel if there wanted to but it was not until 1988 when Astra went up that a dedicated one went up. of course there were no demands to spend on up any earlier.

The technology or political will wasn't in place till Astra 1 and Marco Polos went up for direct to home broadcasting.

Do you know what went wrong with the French claims, there would have been ready by 1986? ( this was made in 1985 I think)

Not sure but TV-SAT 1 was a launch failure for the West Germans in 87 and TV-SAT 2 never really saw a lot of growth after Astra 1A and B launched.

I am still blown away by the MAC standards, I have a Channel Master 35cm BSB dish currently in use for 5W for French TV and still going strong, nearly as a old as me.

Quick question. MAC picture quality. Was it as good as HD is now?

If Granada and Thames had worked together than its futures may would have been different. If Thames were behind several national stations then the loss of its licence may have been less of a shock.

There were also help created "Super Channel" which also failed.

Super Channel was owned by Virgin and all ITV companies, except Thames (and TV-am).

Thames seemed a bit contrarian when it came to cooperation with the other ITV companies (Granada in particular) in new ventures. They also did not bid for for the DBS license, and later opted to buy shares in Astra, competing head-to-head with Granada.

Cheers for those details,

Yes, there was HD-MAC with 1250 (625*2) lines with 1152 lines visible so better than our 1080 lines of today.
