I thought it was a staged joke at first but soon realised that he wasn't coming back. I suppose there were a few clues - the promo 'how far will Amstell go', the anno before the programme 'has Amstell met his match' and then the floor manager rushing over to Preston as he stormed out.
Quite humourous though it could have been better had the replacement, Ed, was able to answer questions or make jokes but that can hardly be expected when you've just been picked out of the audience.
Nice to see some shots of the technical equipment and the audience as well (quite ironically I was thinking just before Preston stormed off whether or not they would ever show the audience)

I think that the way Preston reacted was a bit OTT - if I had been in his position, I would have taken it as a friendly satirical joke. And after all, it was his WIFE's autobiography Simon was reading from?

Simon did actually look genuinely shocked he'd offended Preston, but he did carry on the show quite well. And Ed's (as in the one plucked out of the audience) reclusiveness and confusion was what made him a lot funnier than Preston, who IMO kept on making weak jokes and saying "that's out of order, are you disrespecting my family," etc every other sentence.

"Are you calling me a pikey? Are you calling my dad a whino? Are you calling my mum a prostitute?" *storms out*

And the use of the sombre Neighbours theme at the end was quite amusing...

I remember the BEE JEES episode on the Clive Anderson show - I still have it on tape somewhere (that's how long ago it was). We all passed it round the office.

Americans really need to develop a sence of humour rather than wanting to cry at a spilt bottle of milk every time they see a TV camera. Laughing but that's an aside really.

But the Bee Gees are from the Isle Of Man!

I do though think it's a fundamental rule of television, that no-one who walks off a programme ever makes themselves look good.

Definately a publicity stunt. Tragic.

He had a "face like a smacked *rse" on him, even before Amstell had said as much as "Good evening"! Rolling Eyes

As many have said, I've you're that bloomin' touchy, you don't got on Buzzcocks in the first place Rolling Eyes (or, arguably, anything with Amstell in it! Laughing )

It doesn't make sense that he'd be offended at extracts being read from his wife's book. It's just her own words , being read aloud from a book that has been published - i.e. those words are already in the public domain! If Amstell was being personal (e.g. "Preston, your wife's an air-head, isn't she?" etc) then there'd actually be reason to be offended. But Amstell wasn't making insults of Chantelle.

Thinking about it. I've heard of The Ordinary Boys, but have never heard any of their tracks. I couldn't name even one track. I'm often in public places where music happens to be playing over tannoys etc, so surely I would have bound to "happen to have heard" something by them by now? The fact that I haven't suggests that they don't get much airplay, which in-turn suggests that ther music ain't much cop.

This explains the publicity stunt. Preston's name, his BB appearance, his wife, and the name of his band are all things that are a lot more famous than any of the actual music is. He's a flopstar.

As publicity stunts go, it makes no sense. making people think you've got absolutely no sense of humour will not endear the public to you. If anything, it'll make people even less likely to buy your music. Pathetic.

I'm also riled because I'm such a big fan of Amstell and his attitude.

I agree with those who have said that the Preston-substitute was rather tasty, and it's unfortunate that he's not gay, IMHO! Wink

Erm... Such talk should be left to the Lounge. Thank you. Laughing

Technically they're not in the public domain as they're copyrighted by Chantelle. However, they are in the public "eye". So I also see no reason why Preston should have found it offensive.

I think when Preston saw the book (with all those post it note placemarkers) he must have realised that there was going to be a stream of quotes and decided to exit after the first or second.

Hearing someone insult your spouse is significantly more uncomfortable than dealing with a joke against yourself.

I'm no fan of Preston, but I totally understand his choice to leave.

Apparently it might well have been more because his marriage is apparently in trouble at the moment. That might explain why he didn't want someone going on about his wife and looked unhappy throughout the recording

I did read this around the time it was recorded - around that time he was photographed oput with his ex*. Besides such things don't just manifest themselves in 3 or 4 weeks

Where did you hear this?
As far as i'm aware his marriage is not in any trouble. and the bands album sales are doing relatively well. I still reckon it's to do with his drug problem which was well publicised around the time the programme was recorded. He looked drained and moody from the beginning of the show. Mixing sleeping pills with booze is never a good recipe.
