WOW - Philip Hayton on BBC ONE! This must be the first time he has presented a scheduled bulletin on BBC One since he left for News 24. I wonder why Jane Hill didn't do it. Who is the duty news reader on One today? Is it Jane Hill??
Don't know who was due to do it, but Huw's now in.
I know the official line is that BBC2 English regions have ended, but quite clearly that in practice has meant that they only have no regularly scheduled regional programming on BBC2, but the English regions will still be used if anything needs to be moved off of BBC1. Why not make this policy official?
It would be cheaper for the powers that be to realise that everyone can now receive BBC Two and leave the regional news where it's meant to be on BBC One

True but they wouldn't want Henman getting huge ratings on 2 while the news struggled on 1.

Radio Times has it down as Jane but they were bound to bring someone else in as she has been on News 24 for hours with Phil.
Oooh very impressive coverage, especially from ITV (you would have guessed I would say that but it simply was). Virgin Radio News actually claim they were the first Western News Agency to have the news, but I don't think they were.
ITV appeared to break it first on the News Channel, and straight away they were talking to Simon Harris in Downing Street, Julian Manyon in Iraq (also first western journalist at scene) and defence analyists etc. They just got better, Dimbelby programme was great, John Suchet is currently doing a good job on the News Channel; 10 out of 10 coverage there.
Did not see as much of Sky and BBC as past experience has proved them not to be as good at big breaking stories, and it was proved again today. But they were ok, Sky's Washington Correspondent was up early and BBC were live to Baghdad. Yeah, they were ok.
More breaking news.... car bomb explodes outside hotel in Baghdad.

Oh I agree with that too, but that won't happen. I realise that BBC1 is their flagship channel and they want all the big events to be on there, but when it comes to sports coverage screwing the schedules up I do think it's time that BBC1 and 2 were treated as equals, with it being irrelevant which channel the coverage appears on. I do remember a ludicrous situation in 2001 where just because Henman was winning, they moved the coverage from BBC2 to BBC1 mid-match, disrupting viewing for those watching it, and disrupting the planned schedules of both channels in the progress.
Also, when analogue is finally switched off, I would like to see the BBC (and other broadcasters) establish a part time 'live events' channel, primarily for sport (but could be used for other things aswell). All live programming with the potential to disrupt planned schedules would then be removed from the other channels and put there. Everyone with a TV would be able to see this channel so it wouldn't disadvantage anyone, and that way people who want to watch Wimbledon et al can do so and people who don't watch such programming would see an end to the frustration of schedules being thrown out of the window when coverage overruns.
