"S4C defends concert coverage"

Tv company S4C has come under fire after complaints about it's Tsunami concert coverage.
People watching the concert on S4C tried ringing the station to complain about it NOT showing all of the artists' songs and screening studio interviews in Welsh Shocked

A spokesperson for S4C said,"Commercial and news breaks in addition to items of chat mostly coincided with the onstage breaks in between performances. Very little was missed. It was a major outside broadcasting event for the BBC to undertake."

Was that an apology or an excuse and 'suggesting' that BBC provided their coverage?

ALSO

Cardiff born S4C star is being tipped to become the second Welshman to present childrens' TV show Blue Peter.
A source said Jones was the clear runner to take over the position after successfully fronting the S4C programmes Uned 5 and Popty.
Gethin was named bachelor of the year 2003 in a Company magazine competition. Tim Vincent was the first Welshman to present the show in the mid 1990s.

It seems that a few years presenting on S4C kids programmes does seem to pay dividens with a lot of presenters breaking through onto network television!

But the BBC did provide the concert coverage for S4C (and all other broadcasters who took the concert for that matter) - they were the host broadcaster. S4C is like Channel 4 in that it's a producer broadcaster - it doesn't actually make programmes - it commissions them and "publishes" them. BBC Wales makes a huge amount of programmes for S4C (The soap Pobwl y Cwm is perhaps the most well known) - the rest is made up of independent productions. (How much do HTV Wales still make?)

I don't read this as an apology for it's coverage - nor them passing the buck onto the BBC. I think what they're trying to say is that it was a complex live event, they had to take commercial and news breaks "on the fly". When they did miss part of an act - they did replay it fairly soon afterwards in a later interval (Lemar for example got a second airing after Goldie Looking Chain ...)

And as for people complaining that the studio discussion was in Welsh - well, what did they expect from the National Welsh Broadcaster?!

Well yes apart from the fact S4C make nothing apart from kids tv, I don't think it was a secret it was produced by the BBC.

The fact it was in foreign no doubt contributed helpfully to the monthly quota of hours. I'm not sure they would allowed to be in English entirely from 6-10pm [even though it was only a couple of minutes of chat now and again].

I wonder if Gethin Jones will actually leave S4C mind you -- Rhodri Owen still does his unfunny kids show and Sarra Elgan was doing Planed Plant only last week.

Gethin has been confirmed as BP presenter.

He's almost certainly signed an exclusive contract with the BBC.

I'm of the understanding that S4C pay a lot of money for people who do Welsh language presenting...
