Didn't Westcountry take the spare capacity from Cardiff when the latter stopped inserting C4 ads?

Would this have been for the West region or S4C?

No, you're right, what was used for S4C comms, was re-jigged for Westcountry pres from 1/1/93, which probably means S4C were transmitting the 'HTV sold' ads themselves in the the final weeks of 1992 ?

Possibly, though not necessarily -- the initial setup when YTV started sending most presentation "up the line" to Tyne Tees used the old YTV C4 setup AFAIK (albeit with Newcastle adding live continuity), and continued commercial playout for C4 until the last minute, so it's feasible that HTV did the same.

In the early days at least didn't BBC content on S4C have to go out ad free?

Yes, no centre breaks. Still the case I think ?

Centre breaks on BBC made shows (eg. Pobol y Cwm) have been in place at least since the channel went digital. Although online the ads are replaced with a holding screen - presumably because the channel is broadcast on BBC iPlayer?

From memory programmes like Pobol Y Cwm had ad breaks in the middle of them back in the mid 1990’s. I’m sure it was also sponsored by British Gas back then too (or whatever the welsh language name for British Gas is/was).

Well, possible too. It's just that from 1/1/93 S4C were having to tx their own ads anyway, so it might have all been part of a migration plan between them and HTV?

Surely WestCountry would have wanted to do some piloting before going on air?

Surely Tyne Tees would have wanted to do some piloting before going on air (in new form)?

(Of course they didn't, and the result was an ungodly mess, but that isn't the point 😉)

Agreed, I'm just saying that it's not necessarily the case given there's an example of a very similar scenario where that didn't happen.

I guess the difference between the two was the fact that Westcountry was a separate company paying a fortune for a professional service, and Tyne Tees was a subsidiary of a company that possibly was less interested in professionalism than keeping afloat...
