I call for the closure of this thread before it is getting worse.

Despite not speaking a word of Welsh, I've watched some interesting programmes on S4C before - Gruff Rhys's documentary American Interior being one.

Are the reviving the Clirlun name? I think it was a word they had to invent when they first launched the service.

Isn't it funny how the people who hate S4C are the people who it isn't designed to serve? i.e. monoglot English rugby-hating sheep-eating uncultured heathens from a foreign land?

I am Welsh born and bred. I never miss a Wales international and my apartment overlooks Cardiff Arms Park. I also speak Welsh, and I have to say I don't think S4C is great value as it caters for such a tiny audience.

This suggestion is going to horrify some, but I can't help but feel it would be better to invest the money into English language Wales-related programming and dub them into Welsh. The average cost per viewer hour of Pobol Y Cwm is £2.15, compared to 3.5p for EastEnders. Perhaps the disparity between these figures would be far less if it had an English language screening on BBC One Wales, with a second audio stream containing a Welsh dub.

Wasn't S4C HD closed down to save money a few years back? Guessing the economics have changed...

It was called Clirlun, a word a viewer invented because there wasn't a term for HD in Welsh

High definition in Welsh would be Diffiniad Uchel or DU for short. The only compilation with that would be S4C DU would read as S4C Black to those that don't understand the capitalisation of DU with out it being D.U.

Using S4C HD wouldn't work (for obvious reasons as HD means nothing in Welsh).

Take note, Revitt, this is how to argue your point.

S4C previously used Clirlun for HD.

In other countries they've put "HD" in a channel name even if the first language isn't English, haven't they?

Certainly in France and Switzerland for example.

In those cases, HD stands for Haute Définition.
