I understand it is an Historical symbol to the welsh, but is it what defines the Welsh in this day and age, and is it something which portrays Welsh TV Programming?

Well that's a much more interesting question. I suppose like the stylised thistle used by visitscotland.com, there is a way to bring old symbology into contemporary marketing campaigns.

Does a príckly old weed sum up Scotsmen like me?

So very ho hum. What about this set which isn't bland? Says nothing, does nothing. Could have at least kept the old logo which after 15 years is still solid.

The "flame-throwing" S4C logo was introduced 1995, before that the Dragons were used with the original Bodoni logo.

How rude. Dragons are essential for everything Welsh or the economy collapses.

These idents would be bearable if the new 'logo' didn't have the / in it.

The idea could be applied better -- the local HTV idents from three years ago were a nice, if rather cheap, way of incorporating general Welsh backgrounds for an audience across Wales.

But I mean really, sometimes accuracy isn't that desirable :

Not mentioned hitherto I don't think, is that these idents start next Thursday.

I agree. The / in the logo just looks wrong for S4C.

you'd think with the impending loss [well, i'm presuming analogue s4c with the channel 4 progs will disappear at DSO?] of its most popular programmes, s4c would view its well established brand as one of its most valuable assets

I don't like the / - it's the web influence, just like everyone used to replace 'a' with @ a few years ago if they wanted to make something 'modern'. But I think we'll have to see these idents in motion before we can judge them properly. None of these modern idents look good as static images, from the BBC's swirling circle motif to Channel 4's idents which only resolve into the logo at one particular point.

Here's an old incarnation of TV Ark's S4C page:

I have to admit as fond as I was of the old logo, I do see the reasoning behind the new one. Welsh is my first language and to see the forward-slash before the C does make sense - the acronym stands for S ianel 4 C ymru - i.e. Channel 4 Wales - thus the slash acts as a division to show that the C is the crucial letter in the name.

As for the images in the idents, not necessarily imaginative but they do conjure up the images I have of my homeland so they must be doing something right! I'll look forward to seeing them properly when I next go home.

Iliked the old S4C logo becouse it was simple but nice. The new one is too simple and horrable. it looks like its been done in paint.
