ITV's scientific answer to Top Gear, Braniac and The Gadget Show.

What do you all think to it?

I don't think it's the best piece of TV in the world but it's at least something to watch on a Tuesday night.

I see what you mean, the packages have a very Top Gear influence in places, particularly the establishing and beauty shots.

Not sure that the studio audience adds anything, other than annoying laughter over weak gags in the narration on packages.

Having the audience reminds me of an old late 80s/early 90s science/maths type show Fred Harris fronted on ITV - seem to think Carol Vorderman might have been involved too, possibly a YTV production. A bit like "Think of a Number" for adults.

.

Agreed, and it makes Rachel Riley on the show seem awkward when nobody laughs at the jokes she occasionally tries to make when sometimes they are funnier than stuff Ramesh says.

I have to fast forward over the studio bits - awful. Rest of the show is quite good!

In my opinion, they try far too hard to make this programme seem funny. We don't need a studio audience laughing over footage of turn-up-on-everything 'comedian' Romesh Ranganathan's unfunny comments during a piece about the speed at which drones can fly. It's meant to be a science show, all the 'banter' between each segment is cringe-worthy and pointless. This show has the potential to be interesting and informative, but I can't see it getting a second series bearing in mind the route they've gone down with it.

It all seems just a bit insincere to me, like ITV are making something for the sake of saying they have a science show. They could definitely do with some chemistry... Between the presenters, that is.

The only people who can say what the show is "meant to be" are the people who are making it. The format they've devised is "meant to" have banter in it.

If it returns for a second series, I think they should keep Ben Miller and Rachel Riley and get rid of Ramesh. Personally, I think a trio consisting of Ben Miller, Rachel Riley and Lee Mack could be interesting.

You're probably thinking of Fun and Games - http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Fun_and_Games
No Fred or Carol, although both did other science shows for YTV, but as you see Johnny Ball was involved and it did feel very much like Think Of A Number. We used to love it. Indeed there were quite a few science shows from YTV with audience participation, the famous one was Where There's Life which ran for many years.

There was also Bodymatters on the Beeb with Graeme Garden that was very big on audience participation, and James Burke did similar stuff in the seventies as well. I had actually hoped that It's Not Rocket Science would do a bit more with the audience and have more going on in the studio in the style of those shows, because I think it would make it seem a bit more of a spectacle, but seemingly not.

Agreed, it would be much better if they had the audience join in. You need somebody like Michael McIntyre for that though, who has a good rapport with the audience.
