What happened with that exactly, was that one of the reasons that BBC2 couldn't make a deal to show 24? I heard about all of Europe being able to see it but didn't know what they were on about. I loved the LOTR movies which is strange because I avoided the books like the plague, all the role players and kids that stayed in at lunchtime liked those books. Never been that keen on Star Wars it's all right, hate Jedi and absolutely love Empire. These new ones are just a shameless cash-in, nothing iconic about them and it looks like I'm watching a cartoon with all of that CGI.

My money is on this being the latest visible effect of the BBC's decision to abandon encryption on satellite. The movie studios are just not going to want their latest product being beamed all over Europe in the clear.
