What's happened to movies on the BBC?

Seeing that Channel 4 are showing the Lord Of The Rings trilogy was wondering why the BBC don't seem to show as many as the other networks. LOTR I had down as Christmas time on BBC1. It's like they only show premieres at Christmas and not any other time of the year. And it's like they don't buy films anymore just keep showing the old ones!! Raiders Of The Lost Ark!?! What again!?! Rolling Eyes

Have they bought anything recently?

ain't gotta clue! yeah, I totally agree - I had BBC1 showing LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring last Christmas, then The Two Towers this Christmas and Return of the King Christmas 2006. But Channel 4 got there first. I think Channel 4 and five have been the best terrestrial channels for movies recently. channel 4 + five always show my fav films and I love it when they have 'seasons' on - like Julia Roberts, Glenn Close, Arnold Schwazzenger seasons.

BBC1 - stop repeating and get the movies in Very Happy

It's simply the schedule doesn't allow for primetime movies.

BBC1 has the News at 10pm Monday to Friday, at around 10pm on Saturday followed by Match of the Day and at 10pm on Sunday followed by Panorama.

Therefore they either have to split films by the news, which is quite unpopular and although the BBC do it occassionally, they don't do it often. Otherwise it's either late night or pre-watershed movies - hence why BBC1 is screening Indiana Jones for the millonth time tonight.

BBC2's schedule isn't much more flexible, with Newsnight at 10.30pm Monday to Friday and Match of the Day 2 at 10.30pm on Sunday, really only leaving Saturday nights free.

C4 usually spread their film premieres throughout the year, rather than saving them to Christmas (I guess the BBC do this due to the more flexible Christmas schedules) - and often have big premieres around the Bank Holidays.

P.S. It's not confirmed, but it is implied on the website that C4 will screen the whole trilogy this year, presumably with the second film around the August Bank Holiday and the third over Christmas / New Year.

But the thing is the other channels seem to have so many more premieres. Can you name one high profile BBC movie deal recently apart from Buena Vista? ITV tied up two with Warner Brothers and Universal, the BBC just seem to be sitting around and twiddling their thumbs.

BBC and ITV for many years have been reluctant to put films on in primetime. I suspect because they have to show their own original programming, and with the boom in multiplexes, DVD, pay per view and sky, there are so many opportunities to see a film in the three/four years between its cinema release and terrestrial premiere. channel 4's ratings for the lord of the rings will be very interesting. ill bet that the vast majority of those watching will have already seen the films several times already

While I agree that the BBC should stop repeating much seen movies, I can see their dilemma. If the corporation spent millions on movie deals the public would condemn them for a big waste of licence fee money as they would say "Oh what a waste of money, we've all seen that before!" Harry Potter at Christmas proved this. The big movie of Christmas Day failed to get more than 10 million viewers even though it cost millions to buy.

Then on the other end of the scale when the BBC don't buy movies people say "We pay our licence fee money and we never get movies on the BBC and if we did I wouldn't watch them because Emmerdale or Corrie or (heaven forbid) Footballers Wives is on the other side." A catch 22 situation methinks. Having said that, I do think that the BBC invest far too much money in sport and not enough on movies. There seems to be some kind of sport on everyday on the BBC which is OK for sports fans but not so if you like films like what I do! They need to balance their budget a little better so that everyone is catered for.

I would hate to see a BBC with no sport coverage, but I do believe sport is way over emphasised nowadays. We are seeing a BBC with virtually no movies except for mediocre "Straight to DVD" releases shown each night at midnight. Even at Easter the movies on BBC1 were repeats except for "Enigma". "Billy Elliott" on Easter Monday failed to inspire viewers due to it being on twice before. This coming Bank Holiday the movie "Meet the Parents" is on but after that, nothing! No more movies during the week or at weekends.

One would hope that with the conclusion of the football season next month, BBC1 will use the 10.30 slot to show a Saturday night movie, until the next sporting event comes along and spoils it all!

With reference to LOTR, I won't watch it on C4 due to the amount of adverts that will be shown. It will spoil the majesty and impact of a spectacular movie for me. I'll stick to my DVD!

BBC2 have occasionally shown modern films on saturday nights, like boys dont cry, the pledge and ginger snaps, all of which are quite good and not too mainstream, perhaps they could make a regular thing of this.

To be honest I'd rather see my liscence fee going towards original home produced drama and programming at the standard of Spooks or Doctor Who or comedy like Little Britian.

If I want to see a film I see it at the Cinema or from Blockbuster. No cuts, no adverts no nothing. I don't think I've watched a film on TV in years. If this is a common trend then perhaps that's why the BBC no longer invests in them so much.

My money is on this being the latest visible effect of the BBC's decision to abandon encryption on satellite. The movie studios are just not going to want their latest product being beamed all over Europe in the clear.

I haven't seen any of the LOTR movies. I shall be quite content to live the rest of my days quite happily, knowing that I never watched any of the Star Wars or LOTR movies. Smile

I certainly know what you mean Jamez! Although I've seen all the LOTR films I could not give a crap about the Star Wars films, of which I've only seen the first. Overrated to say the least.

My mate wants me to go into Cardiff at midnight in a couple of weeks time to see the new SW movie. I would chew cotton wool than waste 3 hrs of my time sitting in a cinema surrounded by spectacled batchelors.
