Channel 4 is to launch a talkshow vehicle for celebrity comedian and tabloid regular Russell Brand, understood to be pitched against Jonathan Ross' 11pm Friday night show on BBC 1.

Brand's show will combine celebrity interviews, comedy sketches and live acoustic performances. Guests already confirmed for the show include Courtney Love and Morrissey.

Each week, the series will combine a unique blend of Russell's comic humour, with celebrity interviews, comedy sketches, topical chat on the week's funniest news stories and live acoustic performances from some of the most popular bands in the country.

Angela Jain, Channel 4's factual entertainment commissioning editor, said: "We're delighted to welcome Russell Brand onto Channel 4, especially because he's undoubtedly the man of the moment."

The show will comprise five 40-minute episodes, and is being made by independent producers Vanity Productions.

Just last week, BBC Radio bosses rewarded Brand, who presented 'Big Brother' spin-off 'Big Brother's Big Mouth' on E4, with a move to Radio 2 after only seven months on the corporation's digital alternative station 6 Music.

Perfectly understandable move, the bloke is funny and a laugh to watch. Don't put him against Jonathan Ross though, thats a stupid thing to do! I'd like to watch Russell but given the choice would watch Jonathan every time.

Compare him to how he looked at the start of E4orum to the end of BBBM

His E4 show never took off, but he deserves this chance.

I think he is hilarious at times - but it's a case of less is more.

When I watch Big Mouth I think he's brilliant - but he's also got an annoyance which means I won't watch the show everynight!

Tonight sees his first regular Saturday evening slot on Radio 2 for two hours from 9pm.

I pulled down my pants, pulled out my dingle of a Radio 2 show website

Isn't this just his MTV show '1 Leicester Square'.?
Anyway, whatever you may think of Brand, this can't be any worse then 'The Charlotte Church Show' Rolling Eyes

Apparently his 1 Leicester Square MTV show is ending with a New Years Eve special

He looks different now because he's no longer a heroin addict and he got himself a stylist. Nothing to do with being a geek Rolling Eyes
