Think this deserves a thread of it's own.

You can't go wrong with World in Union as the opening theme - or Steve Rider hosting it really, and a strong team of pundits once again from ITV, though didn't think much of the co-commentator this morning.

Studio looks great, though touch screens are pointless. Not too sure about ITV's main graphics, but they do the job and it's good unlike the BBC they will break away from any generic look for the big event. I do think though the more abstract graphics with the images of the pundits in them are better than the black ones with the turquoise line.

The main IRB graphics aren't that great - too big, too oversized, and we now get a tournament logo on the top right as well throughout. Interesting though how the names of the team switch at half time, so the first team on screen is the one playing left to right. There is no reference to team colours on the scorebar.

The official opening titles, which RTÉ and Setanta are both using, feature only an instrumental version of World in Union, as opposed to the sung version ITV are using for their titles. Features a zoom over New Zealand, some abstract rugby related images, a stadium, the Webb Ellis Cup and fireworks, and then the Rugby World Cup logo.

Here they are:

No such luck from either RTÉ or Setanta - they are using the main graphics (in RTE's case with a slight adaption for some of their own stuff) for everything.

RTÉ has its usual team of Tom McGuirk, George Hook, Brent Pope, and Conor O'Shea. Over on Setanta, its Matt Williams (doing double duty as presenter and panelist) and Neil Francis.

That necessitated RTÉ Two having to reduce its DOG down to about a quarter of its regular size. Setanta just moved theirs over.

That's odd. In practically all football codes except GAA, its Home Team - Away Team (although in international finals these may be purely nominal). In GAA they swap around every time the lead changes which is a bit distracting.

I couldn't not mention what greeted RTÉ viewers this morning before the opening titles even ran - the most embarassing thing the RTÉ Sport department has ever produced. Ever...has to be seen to be believed...

Wonderful effort again from ITV for their World Cup opening sequence, a pastel/smoke/paint effect effort, complete with dual language (Mãori / English) "World in Union" theme tune sung by, guess who, Hayley Westenra.

Shame Steve Rider et al had to talk all over the opening ceremony. Looking forward to four matches tonight!

They aren't IRB graphics as such, they are just the host broadcaster's graphics re-styled in the RWC corporate colours -- the spinning rugby ball motif and the sides changing round in the second half has been a (unique) feature of Sky Sport NZ for at least two years now. Also, because you have the team logo, I'd say colours are redundant -- I imagine the England rose will be on a black background in 11 hours time....

Picture quality on ITV Player on VM isn't that great... will have to see what it's like live. Is it in HD?

American sports, including football, list the home team second as they style their matches as Team A at Team B.

Did STV and UTV show this with the ITV1 idents or did ITV Breakfast let them start broadcasting early like GMTV did when the F1 was on?

ITV1 ident without voiceover on UTV, as if it were overnight.

So, this must mean that the ITV network owe some time to ITV Breakfast. I wonder what form this will take.

As they have started airing 'normal' programmes at weekends from 8:25am, they'll probably just show more 'normal' programmes at 9:25am at various times at weekends, so will be practically unnoticable.

There's a slightly bigger issue than that, in that in the STV and UTV regions, ITV plc get the money from ad breaks between 6:00 - 9:25am. If either STV or UTV start during that period (as they did when the F1 was on) they effectively owe ITV Breakfast advertising time. Maybe it won't be as big an issue as it was in those days though. I didn't see whether any advert breaks went out on ITV during this time, I imagine at least one must have.

The fact that an ITV1 ident went out on UTV doesn't mean UTV hadn't taken over from ITV Breakfast at that point (although I assumed that UTV would take over at 9:25am as normal). Voiceoverless ITV1 idents are a regular occurrence on UTV overnight, though its weird to see one any other time.

Will be interesting to see what happens Sunday morning, will UTV be running their own coverage of Ireland v USA?

How about STV HD? Usually they only broadcast a holding caption between 6 and 9.25. Did they start early?

Can't say I know a lot about what STV/UTV normally do but I did have a look at about 9:00 during the opening ceremony and STV HD were broadcasting complete with their DOG. No DOG on UTV at that time but there were local adverts, including one for UTV Internet.

ITV1 Wales, meanwhile, will be opting out on Sunday morning to provide their own match analysis on the Wales game, fronted by Frances Donovan (ex-BBC Wales sport presenter, now a regular stand-in for Andrea Benfield on ITV Wales News).
